Bobcat boys tennis takes care of host Ankeny, 9-2
ANKENY — With a lineup chock-full of interchangeable parts, the Marshalltown boys tennis team is running like a finely tuned machine regardless of how the pieces fit together.
The Bobcats ran their win streak to six-straight duals with a 9-2 triumph over host Ankeny on Tuesday night, improving to 7-2 for the spring.
Marshalltown junior Jack Gruening played his first-ever match at No. 1 and kicked off a Bobcat singles sweep, defeating Ankeny’s Cade Davis 6-1, 6-1 in the most convincing of the team’s six singles victories.
Luke McKibben bounced Luke Parkinson 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, Luke Smith scored a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jake McCann at No. 3, and Kevin Strand used a fast start to sweep Cam Bush at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-4.
The Bobcats’ wins at Nos. 5 and 6 singles were a bit more dramatic, but both Jacob Smith and Jacob Eberle notched straight-set wins in their respective victories over Ian Ferree and Jacob Schon. The same MHS pair posted a 6-0, 6-2 rout over Ferree and Schon at No. 3 doubles, while Marshalltown’s No. 5 tandem of Nic Price and Ethan Benscoter logged the most lopsided doubles victory, defeating Logan Fine and Mason Bush by a 6-1, 6-0 margin.
McKibben and Luke Smith battled past Ankeny’s top doubles continent, 7-6 (0), 6-3, to give the Bobcats a 3-2 doubles advantage in sending the host Hawks to their fifth-straight dual loss.
Marshalltown is back at home on Thursday, entertaining Mason City in a CIML Iowa Conference pairing at 4 p.m. at the MHS Tennis Courts.
