SPORTS SHORTS: Hoskey throws 3-inning perfecto

GLADBROOK — East Marshall junior Kodie Hoskey pitched a perfect game by striking out all nine batters she faced, helping the Class 2A No. 10 Mustangs beat Gladbrook-Reinbeck 12-0 in a three-inning NICL West Division game here Monday.

Maria Rasmusson hit the first home run of her career, a solo shot in the top of the first inning that kickstarted the Mustangs’ five-run outburst. East Marshall (11-3, 4-1) added another three runs in the second inning and four more in the third en route to the team’s eighth-straight win.

Juliana Arifi finished 2-for-3 with a pair of two-run singles, Hannah Birks was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, and Melinda Puumala was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Madison Farrington went 2-for-3 as well with an RBI double.

Alyssa Morgan took the loss in the circle for Gladbrook-Reinbeck (1-4, 0-4), which plays tonight at South Hardin. East Marshall plays a doubleheader against South Hardin on Wednesday in Eldora.

GMG softball collects season’s first win

DUNKERTON — The GMG softball team scored its first win of the season, matching its season-high scoring output in a 15-3 victory at Dunkerton (1-12) in an Iowa Star Conference game on Monday night.

The Wolverines (1-11) jumped out to an 8-0 lead after two at-bats and never looked back. Kelsey Vaverka struck out seven from the circle for the pitching win, allowing three runs on seven hits and five walks.

Angel Schewe, Emily Vaughn and Belle Duncan had three hits apiece to lead GMG to victory. Vaughn had two doubles and drove in a run, and Duncan had an RBI as well.

Jenna Yilek, Saige Frost and Vaverka each had two hits, including two doubles for Vaverka, while Emma Reed drove in two runs and Marriah Stonewall plated another.

GMG is back at home on Wednesday, hosting Colo-NESCO in Iowa Star action.

West Marshall baseball beats BCLUW

BEAMAN — Nat Markle didn’t allow an earned run and the West Marshall bats backed him, helping the Trojan baseball team defeat BCLUW 14-4 in six innings here Monday night.

Markle struck out seven and walked two, allowing four hits and four unearned runs across six innings.

Cameron Bannister had a single, a double, an RBI and two runs scored, while Ryan Reyerson had a single, a double and three RBIs to lead West Marshall (9-2, 4-0) offensively. Brayden Evertsen, Ben Kielman and Josh Larsen each had two hits, and Larsen plated a pair, while Kaden Davis had an RBI double.

Treye Teske took the loss for BCLUW (0-8, 0-5), allowing nine runs — three earned — over three innings. He walked two and struck out three. Angus Callaway tossed the final three frames, allowing five runs — four earned — on three hits and three walks.

Koty Kruse had a two-run single and Coby Willett had an RBI single, both in the Comets’ three-run fifth, while Mason Yantis and Walker Ashton each had a single.

The Comets, who had to forfeit Friday’s win over Gladbrook-Reinbeck because of a pitch count rules violation, visit Grundy Center on Wednesday night. West Marshall travels to Lynnville-Sully for a non-conference game tonight at Sully.

Tscherter guides G-R past Mustangs

REINBECK — Tyler Tscherter hit two home runs and pitched a five-hit shutout to lead the Gladbrook-Reinbeck baseball team to an 11-0, six-inning victory over East Marshall on Monday night.

Tscherter, a junior, upped his home run total to five while improving to 3-0 on the mound. He struck out seven, walked three and scattered five singles in a complete-game performance for the Rebels (6-4, 4-1).

Wesley Hamor took the loss for East Marshall, allowing four runs on five hits and four walks over three innings, striking out two.

Zach Jacobson, Dane Thompson, Seth Freese, Hunter Vilez and Garrett Kerber each had a hit for the Mustangs (4-7, 2-3), who play Wednesday night at South Hardin. Gladbrook-Reinbeck hosts Sumner-Fredericksburg in a cross-NICL contest tonight in Reinbeck.
