SPORTS SHORTS: Mustangs make it four-straight wins

ALLEMAN — The Class 2A No. 15 East Marshall softball team avenged its season-opening loss to Gilbert by beating the Tigers 7-0 for its second of three wins over the weekend at the North Polk Tournament.

The Mustangs (7-3), who lost their opener at home to Gilbert 7-5, blanked the Tigers on the strength of a shutout pitched by Reagan McIlrath. The junior hurler scattered eight hits and three walks while striking out three in the complete-game victory.

East Marshall’s offense backed McIlrath with 10 hits — all singles — with a three-run outburst in the third inning and a four-run eruption in the fifth. Juliana Arifi had two-run singles in both frames, while Madison Farrington had an RBI single and was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Maria Rasmusson added two hits as well.

The Mustangs capped their 3-0 showing in the tournament by holding off host North Polk 7-4 in the nightcap. East Marshall led 7-1 entering the fifth and final inning (because of the time limit) and withstood the Comets’ comeback.

Farrington connected for her third home run of the season, a solo shot to lead off the top of the fifth, and the Mustangs scored in four of their five at-bats. McIlrath had a two-run double in the team’s three-run first and led East Marshall with three of their 10 hits.

Rasmusson and Farrington had two hits each, including a double, while leadoff batter Melinda Puumala doubled and scored twice. Winning pitcher Kodie Hoskey also doubled while withstanding four errors in the circle. She allowed six hits and two earned runs while walking two and striking out two.

The Mustangs go to Grundy Center in NICL West Division play Monday.

Schaper powers Trojans past Madrid

STATE CENTER — Renae Schaper homered and drove in five runs to help the West Marshall softball team score its first win of the season, a 12-0, three-inning shellacking of Madrid on Friday night.

Schaper had a two-run single in the first inning and a three-run homer in the second as the Trojans (1-3) rapped out 11 hits. After Schaper’s homer, Loran Nicholson and Karisa Blocker were hit by pitches and Payton Halverson drove them both home with a two-run single.

Leadoff batter Kayla Cripps went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, while Lilly Buck was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Halverson finished 2-for-2 with three RBIs.

Nicholson allowed just two hits and faced only one more than the minimum over three innings, striking out one for the win.

West Marshall is slated to host Dike-New Hartford in a cross-NICL contest Monday.

Comets clout Indians, Hawks at Ballard

HUXLEY — The Class 1A No. 13 BCLUW softball team scored two more wins to close out its 3-1 showing at the Ballard Tournament on Saturday.

The Comets (7-3) opened the day by defeating Clarke of Osceola, 7-0, before slugging out a 14-4 triumph over Woodward-Granger.

To start the day against Clarke, Bailey Ashton tossed a five-hit shutout, striking out five in the win. Kiersten Kruse, Kennedy Williams and Madison Ubben each had two of the Comets’ nine hits, while Lili Wilson had an RBI double. Williams and Easton Swanson both drove in a pair.

Kruse got the win in game two as BCLUW backed her with 16 hits in a 14-4, five-inning win over Woodward-Granger. Kruse struck out eight, walked one and allowed six hits and two earned runs.

Offensively, Cate Nason led the Comets going 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Leadoff batter Parker Scurr went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and four RBIs, while Ubben batted 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored at the bottom of the order.

Kruse and Swanson both had two hits, two runs scored and three RBIs.

BCLUW takes to the road to face 1A No. 5 AGWSR in an NICL West Division showdown Monday.
