SPORTS SHORTS: Mustangs make quick work of Cougars

LE GRAND — Madison Farrington hit her fourth home run of the season as the Class 2A No. 15 East Marshall softball team dispatched 1A No. 5 AGWSR in a 13-3, six-inning showdown in NICL West Division play here Wednesday.

Farrington hit a three-run blast in the bottom of the second inning as the Mustangs (9-3, 2-1) scored six times in the frame to take a 7-2 lead. Farrington walked in her other three plate appearances.

East Marshall hurler Kodie Hoskey finished with nine strikeouts but five walks, allowing just six hits to get the win in the circle. The Mustangs backed her with 12 hits, including two doubles for Hoskey herself.

Melinda Puumala finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored, while Maria Rasmusson went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Madison Duncan had a single, scored twice and drove in two runs.

Rachel Sicard took the loss for AGWSR (7-3, 2-2), allowing six earned runs on 12 hits and six walks. She struck out two. Ali Gerbracht and Josie Winterberg had two hits apiece to lead the Cougars, including a triple for Gerbracht.

East Marshall outlasts AGWSR baseball

GILMAN — The East Marshall baseball team scored four times in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back in an eventual 5-2 victory over AGWSR in Wednesday’s NICL West Division clash.

Zach Jacobson pitched all seven innings for the Mustangs, allowing one earned run on three hits and three walks while striking out eight. Jacobson also went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI to lead East Marshall (4-5, 2-1) offensively.

Wesley Hamor and Seth Freese both went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, including a two-run single for Freese in the bottom of the first that broke the game open. Gage Hulin had two hits and Kam Hoskins singled and scored.
