SPORTS SHORTS: Mustangs mash South Hardin; Comets clip Spartans

ELDORA — Hannah Birks homered in support of Kodie Hoskey’s one-hitter in the opening game and Hoskey homered to back Reagan McIlrath in the nightcap as the Class 2A No. 10 East Marshall softball team mashed out a pair of NICL West Division wins on Wednesday night against South Hardin.

The Mustangs (13-3, 6-1) ran their win streak to 10 games in a row with a pair of lopsided victories, beating the host Tigers 10-1 and then 16-0 in just three innings.

East Marshall pounded out 13 hits in the first game, though only led 3-1 before scoring seven times in the top of the seventh. Birks hit her solo homer in the sixth, finishing 3-for-4 with a double, a homer, two runs and three RBIs to lead the Mustangs.

McIlrath, Juliana Arifi and Kayla Mommer had two hits apiece behind Hoskey, who struck out 13 and allowed only a Rachel Rosonke double in the bottom of the fifth for South Hardin (3-10, 1-5).

In the second game, East Marshall sent 21 batters to the plate in the top of the first inning and scored 15 runs on 14 hits, including Hoskey’s two-run round-tripper. Hoskey finished 2-for-3 with a double, a homer and five RBIs to lead the way, while Melinda Puumala, Maria Rasmusson, Madison Farrington and Birks each had two hits.

McIlrath allowed one hit in three innings, as Emma Salvo erased the perfect game with her two-out single in the third.

BCLUW 1, Grundy Center 0

GRUNDY CENTER — Olivia Hughes reached on an error and scored on a passed ball as the game’s only run, lifting Class 1A No. 5 BCLUW to a 1-0 victory over Grundy Center in NICL West Division softball action.

Bailey Ashton spun a four-hit shutout, striking out four while walking three in the win for the Comets (13-6, 6-0). Kiersten Kruse was 2-for-4 to lead the BCLUW bats, while Easton Swanson, Lili Wilson, Cate Nason and Parker Scurr each added a single.

BASEBALL

East Marshall 11, South Hardin 3

ELDORA — Zach Jacobson allowed three hits over five innings for the win and drove in three runs to help himself as the East Marshall baseball team topped South Hardin 11-3 in Wednesday’s NICL West Division battle.

Jacobson struck out nine and walked four, allowing three hits and three runs — two earned — in five innings. Carter Anderson pitched two innings to seal the victory.

Jacobson was 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and three RBIs, while Gage Hulin went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Austin Elliott and Kam Hoskins both singled and scored twice, and Garrett Kerber added a single for East Marshall (5-7, 3-3).

West Marshall 11-12

AGWSR 0-1

ACKLEY — The West Marshall baseball team scored a pair of shortened wins at AGWSR to remain unbeaten in the NICL West Division, beating the Cougars 11-0 and 12-1, both in five innings.

Cameron Bannister struck out nine as he twirled a two-hit shutout in the opener, allowing two hits while still facing the minimum over five innings.

Kaden Davis went 3-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI, while Ben Kielman, Jake Tollefson and Bannister each had two hits and two RBIs.

In the nightcap, Kinnick Christensen allowed an unearned run on two hits and one walk, striking out two in the win for the Trojans (11-3, 5-0).

Josh Larsen connected on his first career home run, going 3-for-3 with a triple, a homer and five RBIs. Tollefson had three hits, including a double, and two RBIs, while Ryan Reyerson had two hits, a run and an RBI. Davis added a run-scoring triple.

Grundy Center 9, BCLUW 1

GRUNDY CENTER — Grundy Center scored seven times in the bottom of the sixth to take down BCLUW 9-1 in NICL West Division baseball.

Brayden Sawyer allowed three hits in six innings for the Spartans, striking out six.

Coby Willett doubled and scored on Noah Gallentine’s single in the top of the first as BCLUW (0-9, 0-6) took a 1-0 lead. Jack Garber and losing pitcher Ray Callaway both added singles for the Comets.
