Frakes fights off Stahl for second place

TAMA — With roughly 2.5 miles left in the girls’ 5-kilometer race, South Tama’s Callie Frakes, Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s Taylor Stahl and Marion’s Peyton Steffen battled for first place at South Tama’s hilly cross country meet on Monday.

Stahl jumped out early in the first mile with a slight lead over Frakes. Frakes, however, caught Stahl on the second mile where she held a slight lead over Stahl and was the lead runner for most of the second half of the race.

After roughly 2 miles of a flat course, South Tama’s terrain featured a third mile of hills. It was in that third mile that Steffen made her move after sitting in third place for the majority of the race.

“It’s tough to watch as a runner,” Stahl said. “You think, ‘well I’ve been leading this whole race and then you decide to chill and wait til I’m a little bit dead and pass me up at the end.’ I don’t really like that but I have to expect that sometimes.”

Like Stahl, Frakes also felt the pressure of Steffen’s strategy.

“I really like our course because it’s all flat the first two miles so I think you can get a great start because there are not really any hills,” Frakes said. “I caught up to [Stahl] during the second mile and by then I was in front. By then [Steffen] was kind of hanging behind me waiting to sneak up on me. We had hills that third mile. I think she was waiting to get me then. I definitely think if I would have done her race strategy that I could have gotten her too.”

“She sat back and waited and I’ve done that race strategy before too. It’s a clever race strategy. I knew she was there and I just thought keep my pace and we’ll see what happens and she got me.”

Steffens ran 21 minutes, 42 seconds, and came out as the winner with Frakes following behind in second place running a time of 21:50. Stahl closed out her race with a third-place finish with a time of 22:06.

“I enjoyed running with those two other girls because they pushed me along and I think we helped push each other along,” Stahl said.

Despite Frakes falling short on her first-place goal, South Tama coach Robert Tyynismaa was pleased with her race.

“She ran well, ran a smart race,” he said. “She didn’t go out too fast which we have to caution our runners about going out to fast. She was jostling with a couple of different runners and [Steffen] who outran her at the end. It was a good race for her coming back off her surgery. She’s work hard and has looked pretty early on.”

South Tama led area teams with a third-place finish scoring 101 points. Alyssa Chyma finished in fourth place with a time of 22:34 and teammate JoJo Tyynismaa ran 24:07 to finish in 15th place. Abbigail Froelich ran 27:20 and Neena Lasley ran 28:00 to finish 26th and 28th place, respectively.

“We finished third as a team at our home meet,” Robert said. “We had our second runner finish fourth overall. Alyssa Chyma has been working really hard over the summer and it’s showing. We are not real deep on the girls’ side. We only have six girls total on the team. It’s really up to those No.3 three, four and five girls on how they finish to determine how the team does.”

GC/G-R finished in sixth place overall with 135 points.

West Marshall finished in fourth place, led by a seventh-place finish by Emelia Hauser who ran 23:07.

East Marshall took fifth place as Ellie Hull led the team running a 23:18 for a 10th-place finish.

In North Tama’s seventh-place finish, Jules Breakenridge finished in sixth place where she ran 23:03.

Meskwaki Settlement School’s only varsity competitor was Shye Johnson, who finished in 11th place in a time of 23:20.

BCLUW did not have a complete team but had Emma Hoover and Chloe Walters run 26:34 and 36:09 to finish in 40th and 61st place, respectively.
