SPORTS SHORTS: Berhow scores 36, leads UNI to victory

CEDAR FALLS — Trae Berhow poured in a career-high 36 points and Northern Iowa breezed to an 87-67 victory over UT Martin on Tuesday night at the McLeod Center.

Berhow made 13 of 17 shots from the floor, including 8 of 11 from beyond the 3-point arc.

AJ Green had 14 points and nine assists for the Panthers (5-0). Austin Phyfe added 11 points on 5-of-5 shooting and 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. Isaiah Brown pitched in with 11 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Parker Stewart hit four 3-pointers and scored 22 for the Skyhawks (2-3). Derek Hawthorne Jr. added 18 points and eight rebounds, while Quintin Dove tallied 12 points and nine rebounds.

The Panthers knocked down 32 of 54 shots (59 percent) overall and 16 of 34 from distance (47 percent).

Joens helps Cyclones drop TSU women

AMES — Iowa State sophomore Ashley Joens compiled the first 30-point, 20-rebound performance in school history to help the Cyclone women’s basketball team beat back Texas Southern, 79-59, in Tuesday’s game at Hilton Coliseum.

Joens helped the Cyclones (2-1) pull away from the pesky Tigers (1-2) with a 29-16 fourth-quarter scoring advantage. Iowa State led 50-43 going into the final period but shot 11-for-12 from the free-throw line to stretch the final margin.

Joens shot just 6-for-18 from the field but was 16-for-18 at the free-throw line.

Kristin Scott added 18 points and eight rebounds off the bench for Iowa State, which trailed the Tigers by seven points in the first quarter.

Niya Mitchell had 27 points, eight rebounds and six steals to lead Texas Southern.

Iowa State returns to action with a road game Friday against North Dakota State in Fargo, N.D.
