SPORTS SHORTS: BCLUW girls ward off Belle Plaine

BELLE PLAINE — BCLUW sophomore Chloe Walters scored a game-high 23 points as the Comet girls’ basketball team beat back Belle Plaine 45-34 on Monday night.

It’s the second time Walters has scored more than 20 points this season, and she also had six rebounds to lead the Comets (3-2) to victory.

Allison Engle and Lizzie Garber added six points apiece for BCLUW, and Engle led the way with four steals. Madison Ubben pulled down six rebounds as well.

Alyssa Tegeler led Belle Plaine (2-2) with 16 points. The Plainsmen trailed 16-6 after the first quarter but had pulled back to within 29-26 at the end of the third. BCLUW pulled away with a 16-8 scoring advantage in the fourth period.

BCLUW goes on the road Friday to face Grundy Center in NICL West Division play, and the Comets are back at home Saturday with a non-conference tilt against North Tama.

ISU’s Bolton receives Big 12 award

AMES — Iowa State men’s basketball player Rasir Bolton has been named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week after averaging 18 points as the Cyclones went 2-0 last week.

Bolton capped his week with 17 points and a career-best eight rebounds in Iowa State’s win against No. 16 Seton Hall on Sunday night at Hilton Coliseum. Earlier in the week, Bolton scored 19 points against Kansas City.

The Petersburg, Va., native connected on 18-of-21 free throws last week and is shooting 82.4 percent at the line this season.
