Drake hoops adds Green Bay transfer

ShanQuan Hemphill
DES MOINES — ShanQuan “Tank” Hemphill, a 6-foot-6 forward from Gary, Ind., has joined the Drake University men’s basketball team, head coach Darian DeVries announced Friday.
Hemphill is transferring from Green Bay, where he spent the last four seasons and will have one remaining year of eligibility.
“We are excited to have ShanQuan Hemphill joining our program,” DeVries said. “ShanQuan will bring value to our team in athleticism, toughness, rebounding and an ability to be a dynamic scorer at the wing. Most importantly, our fans will enjoy watching him. His competitive spirit on the court is contagious.”
Hemphill missed the majority of the 2019-20 season due to injury, but as a junior he started all 38 games and scored in double figures 28 times for the Phoenix. He averaged 11.7 points per game on 52.8 percent shooting and was named to the CollegeInsider.com all-tournament team after scoring 21 points with 13 rebounds in the CIT title game. That was one of his five double-doubles on the season.
Before enrolling at Green Bay, Hemphill played two seasons at Florida SouthWestern State College under current Drake assistant coach Marty Richter. He earned all-Suncoast Conference first-team honors in 2018 and scored in double figures 27 times during the season. He ranked third on the team averaging 14.2 points per game.
While at Florida SouthWestern, he was teammates with current Bulldogs Tremell Murphy and D.J. Wilkins and hails from the same Northwestern Indiana region as new Drake teammates Murphy, Wilkins, Roman Penn and Jonah Jackson.
