Big Four RBs on Doak Walker watch list

DALLAS — Three Big Four running backs have been named as preseason candidates for the Doak Walker Award, which is presented annually to the best running back in college football.

University of Iowa’s Mekhi Sargent and Tyler Goodson, and Iowa State’s Breece Hall, were named to the award’s preseason watch list, which was announced on Wednesday.

Sargent, a senior, was Iowa’s second-leading rusher in 2019 after finishing with 119 carries for 563 yards and four touchdowns last season. As a sophomore he ran for 786 yards and nine touchdowns. He currently ranks 31st in career rushing yards at Iowa.

Goodson became the first freshman to lead the Hawkeyes in rushing last fall, racking up 638 yards on 134 carries, scoring five touchdowns. He also had 24 receptions for 166 yards.

Hall, a sophomore, debuted as a true freshman and led the Cyclones in rushing with 897 yards and ranked fourth nationally among freshmen. His 897 yards mark the second-best total by a freshman in school history, and he broke ISU’s rookie record with nine touchdowns.

Tyler Goodson

Hall ranked second in the Big 12 Conference averaging 95 rushing yards per game. He also piled up 23 receptions for 252 yards.
