MHS seniors all-conference again

T-R FILE PHOTOS - Marshalltown High School senior softball players Erica Johnson, left, and Madi Finch, right, received their fourth and fifth all-conference honors, respectively, as they were both recently named first-team CIML Iowa Conference.

It was a difficult season for Marshalltown High School softball in 2020. In the COVID-shortened year the Bobcats won just three of their 24 contests — all in CIML play against Des Moines North, Des Moines Hoover and Ames — and finished last in their division, ending the season with a first-round loss in the Class 5A regional playoffs to Cedar Falls.

The presence of COVID meant there was no meeting to determine all-conference teams, so coaches sent in their nominations and all were included.

Two Bobcats were named to the all-conference first team following the season: seniors Madi Finch and Erica Johnson. Johnson hit .258 and led the Bobcats with 17 hits. Johnson was an honorable mention for three years prior to 2020. Finch hit .186 and scored six runs this summer, making the first team after four years as an honorable mention.

Two Bobcat outfielders were nominated for the second team: senior Gabby Himes and junior Kyra Feldman. Himes hit .259, with all 14 hits being singles. Feldman hit .250 and had five doubles on the season, collecting five RBIs.

Six Marshalltown players earned honorable mention honors: sophomores Paige Wertzberger, Avery Mull, Autumn Finch and Jaydn Palmer, and juniors Emma McWherter and Kailee Pollard.

Pollard and Mull (who was an honorable mention last season) were two of the Bobcats’ primary pitchers this season, with Pollard throwing 51 innings and Mull tossing 45. Pollard started 11 games while Mull started 10, and Pollard led the team with 31 strikeouts. Mull also hit .264 on the season.

Wertzberger led the Bobcats in home runs, hitting the team’s only three bombs of the season and batting .311 with a team-high 10 RBIs. McWherter was an honorable mention in 2019 as well and hit .263 this season.

Palmer scored five runs in 2020. Autumn Finch played in 11 games in spite of an ankly injury, hitting .167 and scoring three runs.
