SPORTS SHORTS: Mustangs stifled by Benton baseball

GILMAN — Drew Lange struck out five in a complete-game shutout as the Benton Community baseball team blanked East Marshall 11-0 in six innings here Wednesday.

In the regular-season finale for the Mustangs (3-11), they came up with eight hits but no runs to show for them. Landon Elliott and Hunter Vilez both went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Wesley Hamor added a double in the non-conference loss.

Jaron Johnson pitched four innings in defeat, allowing four runs — two earned — on six hits and one walk while striking out one. Blain Augspurger pitched the final two frames.

Dane Thompson, Zach Jacobson and Jordan Swift each added singles for the Mustangs, who open Class 2A district play on Saturday in Eldora. East Marshall meets South Hardin at 7 p.m. in the second game of the day.

Top-ranked Wildcats handle Trojans

CARLISLE — The Class 4A No. 1 Carlisle softball team turned away West Marshall in three innings here Wednesday night, winning 12-0.

West Marshall freshman pitcher Madeline Karsjen took to the varsity circle for the first time this season and surrendered six hits and five walks in a losing effort. Carlisle (15-3) scored five times in the first inning, three times in the second and four more in the third to end the game early.

Meredith Hoffman hit a three-run homer and walked twice for the Wildcats.

West Marshall (7-6) managed just one hit against Molly Hoekstra. Clara Dee walked to lead off the top of the third and Kalyn Polley got a one-out single, but both runners were stranded in scoring position.

The Trojans host Boone tonight in State Center.
