Bobcats use depth to sink CR Washington

The Marshalltown girls’ swimming and diving team was on the wrong side of the ledger for event victories, but on the right side of the final team tally.

The Bobcats defeated Cedar Rapids Washington on Thursday night, winning 94-91 in a dual meet that was moved from Cedar Rapids because of damage the Warriors’ school suffered in the derecho more than four weeks ago.

Marshalltown, which had Tuesday’s home meet against Des Moines North wiped off the calendar because of the Des Moines Public Schools’ fight with the Iowa Department of Education over remote learning and extracurricular activities, moved to 2-1 despite Cedar Rapids Washington winning seven of the dual’s 12 events.

The Bobcats got by behind their depth in individual events and another dominant performance on the diving board.

Abby Tollefson totaled 212.50 points to lead Marshalltown’s 1-2-4 finish in the diving competition, leading teammate Mia Rasmusson (194.65) on the final toteboard. Kaisa Stanley scored fourth with a 181.90.

The other four Bobcat victories came in individual swimming events, highlighted by Lesli Waltermire’s pair of podium-toppers. The freshman finished atop the field in the 200-yard freestyle in 2 minutes, 11.36 seconds, and she also claimed the 500 freestyle in 5:53.54.

Averie Whitkop collected the top spot in the 100 freestyle, touching up in 59.48, and she also scored a silver for her second-place finish in the 50 freestyle (27.09). Whitkop and Waltermire both swam on a pair of runner-up relays, too.

MHS senior Klaudia Hernandez claimed her squad’s final event win of the night, notching a first-place result in the 100 breaststroke in 1:19.71. The Bobcats outscored the Warriors well enough in the penultimate event that it allowed Marshalltown to only require second place out of its 400 freestyle relay team to seal the meet.

The Bobcats are slated to return to the pool on Tuesday with a CIML Iowa Conference dual meet at Mason City.
