MHS gets 3 medalists in CIML Iowa Conference

MASON CITY — Marshalltown boys’ golf finished third in its Conference meet held Tuesday afternoon at Highland Park Golf Course in Mason City and got three finishers inside the top-10.

Grant Greazel led the Bobcats with a 3-over round of 75 and a fifth-place finish, recording three birdies, four bogeys and a double-bogey on the day. Drake Polley finished second on the team and sixth in the tournament with a 6-over 78, and Kevin Strand shot a 7-over 79 to sneak into 10th place and earn a medal.

Head coach Lucas Johnson said he was impressed with the team’s scoring, and particularly in Strand’s performance.

“Kevin Strand is someone who has worked hard on his game this season after just starting to play competitive golf this summer,” Johnson said. “For him to finish in the top 10 at conference is a great achievement in his first year on the team. After a couple of tough holes on the front nine, Drake Polley had one of his best stretches of the season, shooting even par on the back nine. While we’ve seen the front nine at Highland multiple times, none of our guys had seen the back nine before today.”

Following the top three were Colin Schmit in 17th with an 11-over 83, while his brother Ryan shot a 13-over 85 and finished 21st. Cael Sandvick finished 24th with an 87.

The Bobcats recorded a team score of 318, only six shots behind runners-up Ankeny Centennial. Ankeny ran away with a 20-shot team victory and has yet to lose a meet all season.

Up next for the Bobcats is District play at Elmcrest in Cedar Rapids. If the Bobcats qualify for the State Tournament, it will be held at Des Moines Golf and Country Club.

Johnson is putting his trust in the team to be confident ahead of postseason play.

“Now is the part of the season where guys need to trust the work they’ve put in and just go out there and have fun,” Johnson said.
