SPORTS SHORTS: G-R recovers from slow start to beat BCLUW

REINBECK — After a rough start to the game, the Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ basketball team used 3-pointers to help come back from a 17-1 deficit to beat BCLUW 69-47 Friday night in NICL West action.

The Comets (7-9, 3-5 NICL West) started the game out on fire thanks to Noah Gallentine and Jesse Moore’s backcourt play conducting the offense. But after taking an 18-8 lead through one quarter, the Comets were outscored 61-31 the rest of the game.

A 25-point third quarter gave G-R (11-2, 6-1 NICL West) the lead for good, and then in the fourth quarter the Rebels continued to expand their lead. The Rebels hit 12 3-pointers and shot 48 percent from behind the arc.

Leading the way for the Rebels was Dylan Riffey with 19 points and three 3-pointers. William Kiburis scored 16 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, dished out eight assists and grabbed four steals. Caleb Egesdal hit five 3-pointers and scored 15 points. Tristan Sanford-Anders scored seven points and also grabbed 11 rebounds.

Trojans fall away in second half

TIFFIN — South Tama boys basketball was undone by a poor third quarter on the road against Clear Creek-Amana Friday night in a 66-36 loss.

The Trojans (1-9, 1-8 WaMaC) were led on offense by Eli Keahna with nine points and five rebounds. Matt Wiese and Gavin Bridgewater scored eight points apiece. The Clippers (13-2, 12-1 WaMaC) outscored South Tama 37-15 in the second half and held the Trojans to four points in the third quarter.

The Trojans have now lost four-straight games after their only win of the season against Benton. The Trojans play Benton at home Monday night.

STC girls routed by Williamsburg

TAMA — South Tama girls’ basketball continued its winless season with a 52-9 defeat at the hands of Williamsburg (7-9, 6-8 WaMaC) Thursday night. The Trojans score five points in the first half, no points in the third quarter and four points in the fourth quarter.

Kailee Meek led the team with four points, while Carissa Musgrave scored three points and Lauren Veit had two. Musgrave had five steals to lead the team. On the other end, the Trojans turned the ball over 32 times.

Trojans go 2-1 at Gilbert quad

GILBERT — The West Marshall wrestling team won two and lost one Thursday night at Gilbert against Gilbert, South Central Calhoun and Perry.

In the first match against Gilbert, Austin Pfantz (170 pounds), Sam Schaper (220 pounds), Landin Eggers (106 pounds), Colin Vellinga (120 pounds) and JD Downs (126 pounds) all picked up vital pins for the Trojans as they scraped by with a 42-39 victory.

Against Perry, the Trojans picked up eight pins. Pfantz, Schaper, Eggers and Downs picked up pins again while Caden Vellinga (132 pounds), Miles Moore (138 pounds), Luke Coulter (160 pounds) and Grant Nason (195 pounds) also pinned their opponents. The Trojans won 57-18.

The Trojans’ 42-39 defeat to South Central Calhoun included six West Marshall pins.

Downs, Caden Vellinga, Coulter, and Nason picked up pins again. Elijah Meester (heavyweight) and Wyatt Weuve (195 pounds) pinned their opponents as well.
