Bobcats finish off make-up match, beat Little Cyclones

AMES — A daunting schedule revealed ideal results for the Marshalltown boys’ tennis team as the newly-ranked Bobcats blasted Ames in Monday’s make-up meet.

Marshalltown, which had been slated for as many as five meets during a three-day stretch last week, finished off the first of those events by beating the Little Cyclones (0-2) in convincing fashion. Last Thursday’s meeting was moved to Monday by rain, and MHS head coach James Christensen got his first win against Ames in the process.

The Johnston Invitational getting rained out on Saturday was a blessing in disguise for the Bobcats, who had to endure intermittent rain on Friday before completing their triangular meet with Newton and Mason City after 11 p.m.

Marshalltown was instead rested and refreshed to face Ames on Monday, and the Bobcats won nine of their 10 bouts in straight sets.

A singles sweep gave MHS all it needed for the team win, but Nile Christensen’s three-set comeback was icing on the cake at No. 6 singles. Christensen rallied for a 2-6, 6-4, (10-4) triumph over Taylor Xu to deliver the team dual before it had actually ended.

Kevin and Jason Strand both won their singles matches, as well as their No. 1 doubles match, by the same score: 6-0, 6-1. The No. 4 doubles tandem of Justin Melde and John Loney got their victory by the same margin against Steven Tian and Akshay Sarda.

The Bobcats, now 5-1 overall, travel to face Ottumwa on Tuesday night.
