SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat boys runners-up in Waukee Relays

WAUKEE — A school record fell and a hurdler recorded a personal best for the Marshalltown boys’ track and field team in the Waukee Boys’ Relays on Thursday.

With 86 team points and three event wins, the Bobcats had a strong day. This was led by senior Dwight Joar, who took two of the team’s three wins and set a personal best with his 15.21-second run in the 110-meter hurdles. Joar also was the winner of the high jump, scoring a best of 6 feet, 2 inches, to outleap the competition.

The Bobcats set a school record in the sprint medley relay. The team of Mannie Kparyea, Malachi Holmes, Deonté Dean and Jaiden Buchanan topped the school charts with a 1:35.96 and took home the victory.

Holmes finished fourth in the 100 dash with 11.14 and fourth in the long jump at 20-9.75. Aidan DeVolder grabbed two third-place finishes in the shot put and discus, with high marks of 44-3 1/2 and 139-5 respectively.

Marco Herrera was fourth in the 800 at 2:12.34.

Bobcat girls compete in Jaguar Invitational

ANKENY — Marshalltown girls’ track and field finished sixth out of seven teams competing in the Jaguar HS Invitational Thursday afternoon.

The Bobcats had 24 team points, only ahead of Des Moines East with 12. In a difficult competition, the Bobcats’ leading finishers were in the field events.

Mia Rasmusson finished fourth in the high jump, part of a four-way tie for third with a best of 4 feet, 10 inches.

Lilly Duff finished fourth in the discus toss with a strong best of 103-4, missing the top three by six feet. The Bobcats’ best relay finish was fifth out of six teams in the shuttle hurdle relay, running the race in a time of 1 minute, 12.56 seconds.
