NEWTON — The North Tama boys’ golf team fell off the pace on the second day of the Class 1A boys’ state golf tournament and slipped to fifth place in the final standings on Friday at Westwood Golf Course.

The Redhawks shot an opening-round 344 to slot in third after Thursday’s first 18 holes. On day two, however, North Tama totaled 370 to slide back two spots in the nine-team tournament.

AGWSR won the school’s first boys’ state golf championship with a two-day total of 333-348–681. The Cougars had the low team score on both days of the tournament and finished 10 strokes ahead of Newell-Fonda (691). East Buchanan (695) and Fort Dodge St. Edmond (710) leapfrogged the Redhawks (714) on the final day of the event.

North Tama was led by senior Paden Ketter, who placed 15th individually with rounds of 81-89–170. Michael Bell, a junior, was unable to capture the magic a second straight day and shot 79-95–174 to place 19th overall, and sophomore Michael Schrier shot 92-88–180 to take 26th. Fellow sophomore Jack Schafer rounded out the Redhawks’ scoring with his 92-99–191.

Schrier’s 88 was the team’s low score on day two.

North Tama senior Aaron Snider shot 98-98–196 and sophomore Trent Whitmore took eight strokes off during the second day in his 106-98–204.

Lucas Gunderson of Harris-Lake Park won the 1A medalist honors with his 76-73 and a 7-over-par total of 149.

The Gilbert Tigers had three of the top-10 finishers and claimed the school’s first boys’ state golf championship with a comfortable 29-stroke advantage on Thursday and Friday at Elmwood Country Club.

The Tigers tallied the low team total on both days of the tournament, following up a 311 with a 316 for their winning 627. Solon shot 656 for second place, and Spirit Lake carded 669 for third in the 10-team event.

Waverly-Shell Rock junior Hogan Hansen had a masterful two-day trip around the Elmwood track, shooting 72-73–145 to claim 3A medalist honors at 5-over-par. Spirit Lake’s Jackson Laven was second with a 75-72–147, and Gilbert sophomore Brock Snyder was third at 75-73–148.

FORT DODGE — Three strokes separated the top three finishers at the Class 2A boys’ state golf tournament at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course, with West Branch emerging as champion for the sixth time in program history.

The Bears shot 321-232–644 to edge out Grundy Center (322-323–645) and Lake Mills (319-327–646) for the 2A crown, winning their first state title since claiming four-straight from 1989-1992.

Dyersville Beckman, which placed eighth out of nine teams, was represented well by meet medalist Nathan Offerman, a sophomore who shot a 2-under-par 70 on the second day to finish in with a 79-70–149. Grundy Center junior Ashton Martens took second with a 78-73–151, and Tipton junior Bob Ryan was third with matching 76s (152).

West Branch’s team title arrived because of a balanced attack. Will Bridges finished sixth overall with his 155 total, and the Bears’ other five golfers all shot beetween 165-170. Dylan Countryman carded a 165, Brady Knoop shot a 166, and Logan Highly added a 167.
