Hawkettes no-hit MHS softball in nightcap

ANKENY — The Marshalltown softball team allowed just 11 singles over a doubleheader to Class 5A No. 13 Ankeny, but the Bobcats couldn’t contain their own miscues in a pair of CIML Iowa Conference losses.

MHS made four errors in the first game and seven more in the second, suffering 7-1 and 7-0 losses that included a no-hitter in the nightcap.

Ankeny junior Ashtyn Billings struck out eight, walked none and faced the minimum over a complete-game performance. Two Bobcats — Emma McWherter and Sophie Younkin — reached on errors, but both were thrown out on the basepaths.

Marshalltown sophomore Ava Augustine returned to the lineup after a week off due to injury, and she performed well in the circle in spite of the layoff. She allowed seven runs (three earned) on seven hits and three walks while striking out three.

In the opener, Augustine had two of Marshalltown’s four hits in a 7-1 loss. Avery Mull reached with a one-out single in the top of the first inning, her courtesy runner Ava Kusserow stole second, advanced on a groundout and scored on Augustine’s bunt single.

Augustine singled to lead off the fourth and moved all the way to third on passed balls, but Ankeny pitcher Kendra Winfrey struck out the side to avoid any damage. Autumn Finch singled in the sixth but didn’t advance past second.

Winfrey struck out 10, hit two batters and allowed just four singles. Mull took the loss, allowing seven runs (two earned) on just four hits but seven walks and one hit batter. She struck out one.

The Bobcats go back out on the road Wednesday with a doubleheader at No. 2 Fort Dodge before hosting Des Moines Lincoln in a Thursday twinbill.
