SPORTS SHORTS: Sixth-ranked Rebels outlast South Hardin, 61-60

REINBECK — Tristen Sanford-Anders scored a game-high 23 points to help the Class 1A No. 6 Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ basketball team overcome South Hardin 61-60 in an NICL West Division showdown here Monday night.

Caleb Egesdal and William Kiburis added 14 points apiece for the Rebels (14-0, 6-0), who trailed 57-56 when South Hardin’s Mason Sheldahl lost the ball going up for an uncontested layup with just more than one minute remaining.

Egesdal sank a 3-pointer with 54 seconds left and Isaac Clark converted a back-door pass from Egesdal to make it 61-57. Ryan Walters came up empty on the Tigers’ next trip down the court, but his 3-pointer with 8 seconds remaining tightened things up.

Kiburis smartly waited to pick up the basketball until there were 5 seconds left, and the Rebels ran the clock out without having to attempt an inbounds pass.

Sheldahl led South Hardin (6-6, 3-3) with 19 points, Jake Teske made five 3-pointers for 15 points, and Walters finished with 14 points.

Three reach double digits as Comets chase off Cougars

CONRAD — The BCLUW girls’ basketball team got three scorers in double figures to help earn the season split with AGWSR, beating the Cougars 48-38 in Monday’s NICL West Division clash.

Allison Engle scored a game-high 18 points to go with her team-leading nine rebounds, four assists and three steals for BCLUW (7-6, 3-3). Chloe Walters added 12 points and seven rebounds, and Sydney Anderson made three 3-pointers on her way to a career-high 12 points for the Comets.

BCLUW led the Cougars (7-6, 4-2) by just three, 29-26, going into the fourth quarter before outscoring the visitors 19-12 in the final frame.

Grace Finger led AGWSR with 16 points and seven rebounds. Ava Olson and Brynn Smith both scored nine points.

BCLUW hosts East Marshall in conference play Friday.

Sturtz scores 16 to help Bulldogs edge Salukis

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Garrett Sturtz had 16 points off the bench to lead the Drake men’s basketball team to a 60-59 win over Southern Illinois on Monday night.

Tucker DeVries had 14 points for Drake (13-5, 4-1 Missouri Valley Conference). Tremell Murphy added seven rebounds.

After heading to halftime with a 35-27 advantage, Drake managed to hang on for the victory despite being outscored by 7 points in the second half. The Bulldogs’ 25 points in the second half marked a season low for the team.

Marcus Domask had 15 points for the Salukis (9-8, 2-3).
