STATE CENTER — The West Marshall girls’ golf team capitalized on its home-course advantage and captured the Heart of Iowa Conference crown on Wednesday at Lincoln Valley Golf Course.

All six Trojans finished in the top-12 individually, and all four scoring golfers placed sixth or better. Ella Meyer took third place her round of 90, Kalyn Polley finished fourth with the same score, Allie Pfantz placed fifth with a 94 and Emma Stanley was sixth with her 95.

Lauren Solberg shot a 97 and placed eighth overall and Josi Zahnd shot 103 for 12th place.

West Marshall’s 369 team score was a cozy 24 strokes ahead of runner-up Roland-Story (393) in the eight-team tournament. The Norsemen were represented by the top two individuals in medalist Makenna Carlson, who shot an 87, and Ellie Erickson, who carded an 89.

BCLUW leads area teams at NICL boys golf

CEDAR FALLS — BCLUW was the local leader at the North Iowa Cedar League boys’ golf tournament on Wednesday at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course, finishing 12th out of 16 teams.

The Comets totaled 362 as a team, led by Bodie Butler in 31st place with a round of 85. Ray Callaway came in 40th overall with an 88, Kade Pekarek shot 94 and Walker Ashton added a 95 to round out the Comets’ scoring.

East Marshall placed 13th with its 398 total. Seth Freese led the Mustangs in 41st place with his round of 88, Toby Ryan carded a 93, Colton Robinson shot 103 and Alex Jacobson closed out the scoring with a 114.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck struggled into last place with a 469 team total. The Rebels’ four counting scores came from Michael Boyd (114), Isaac Baer (115), Trey Eggers (115) and Austin Gehring (125).

Grundy Center won the 16-team tournament with a 303 team score, followed by Hudson (322), Union (334) and Aplington-Parkersburg (334). Grundy Center’s Ashton Martens won medalist honors with a 1-over-par 73 and Denver’s Clayton Liddle was runner-up with a 74.

Tollefson fifth, Trojans fourth at Heart of Iowa golf

STATE CENTER — The West Marshall boys’ golf team finished fourth out of eight teams at the Heart of Iowa Conference tournament held Tuesday at Lincoln Valley Golf Course.

The Trojans finished in with a 346 team total, just eight strokes out of first place. Nevada and Greene County tied for low score with a 338, with Nevada collecting the team title on the fifth-score tiebreaker. South Hamilton was third with 345.

Joey Tollefson led West Marshall with a round of 9-over-par 81 to finish in fifth place. Luke Vawter also medaled with his 84, good for seventh place. Will Dawley collected 11th place with an 88, and Peyton Hart completed the team scoring with a 93.

Greene County posted the two low rounds for the tournament with Joe Carey earning medalist honors with a 76 and Jack Hansen the runner-up with a 77.

River Hawks run it up on MHS girls soccer

MASON CITY — Claudia Sewell scored four goals while both Reggi Spotts and Kenna Hemann had three tallies as the Mason City girls’ soccer team dispatched Marshalltown 10-0 in Tuesday’s CIML Iowa Conference match.

The River Hawks (6-5, 1-4) finished off the Bobcats 13 minutes shy of regulation thanks to their trio of goal scorers. Spotts finished the night with 11 points as she also contributed five assists to Mason City’s first conference win.

Kathryn Johnson had 10 saves on 20 shots on goal for Marshalltown (0-11, 0-5), which hosts Des Moines Hoover tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Leonard Cole Field.

STC/EM boys outlast Mount Vernon

TAMA — Pedro Nunez scored a pair of second-half goals to lift the South Tama County/East Marshall boys’ soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Mount Vernon in Tuesday’s WaMaC Conference match.

Jordan Bly made 11 saves on 12 shots on net for STC/EM (5-5). Kendall Balderas was credited with an assist for the Trojans, who were outshot 31-15.

Eli Dickson scored the lone goal for Mount Vernon (6-7).

MCC baseball players honored by ICCAC

Marshalltown Community College baseball players Josh Ironside and Clayton Slack were named Iowa Community College Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week for games April 25 to May 1.

Ironside, a sophomore pitcher from Alberta, Canada, was instrumental in the Tigers’ 6-5 win over ninth-ranked Kirkwood on April 27. He scattered six hits and two earned runs over six innings for the win, striking out eight and walking two.

Slack, a freshman shortstop from Viroqua, Wis., had multiple hits in five of MCC’s six games during the week, including one four-hit game and three three-hit games. He was 16-for-22 at the plate with four doubles, two triples, nine RBIs, five stolen bases and 17 runs scored.

The Tigers close the regular season with three home games this weekend against Iowa Central.
