SPORTS SHORTS: Trojans tip the scales against Saydel for sweep

STATE CENTER — The Class 2A No. 6 West Marshall baseball team got a pair of strong pitching performances and just enough offense to score a doubleheader sweep of Saydel in Monday’s Heart of Iowa Conference clash.

Owen Siegert went the distance in the opener, a 2-0 win for West Marshall. He struck out nine and walked two, scattering five hits in the complete-game shutout.

The Trojans (13-6, 7-1) scored both of their runs in the bottom of the sixth, starting with AJ Dee’s leadoff double. Courtesy runner Evan Siegert scored when Owen’s sacrifice bunt was misplayed, and Owen scored on Kinnick Christensen’s single.

In the nightcap, Christensen pitched 6 2/3 innings before his pitch count expired. He left the bases loaded for Clay Cuva, who struck out the only batter he faced for the save in a 4-2 Trojan victory.

Saydel got two runs in the third inning against Christensen, who allowed only three hits and two walks. He struck out nine. West Marshall compiled six of its seven hits in the fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run single for Caden Pfantz. D.J. Ridout and Tony McKinney both had RBI singles as well.

BCLUW backs down Janesville in non-conference softball

CONRAD — The BCLUW softball team scored at least once in each of its at-bats to beat Janesville 12-2 in six innings here Monday night.

The Comets (8-4) also got a strong pitching performance from Katie Hill, who allowed only four hits and one walk while striking out four. Neither run came earned.

Raegan Crawford and Cassie Nason both had three hits to lead BCLUW offensively. Crawford drove in two runs and Nason had an RBI as well. Morgan Bergman had two hits, while Callie Swanson had two hits and drove in two runs. Kaylee Grant, Maliah Gunderson, Cameron Bergman and Emma Hoover each contributed a single in the win.

Grundy Center sweeps East Marshall baseball

GRUNDY CENTER — The East Marshall baseball team was swept 4-0 and 11-5 by Grundy Center in Monday’s NICL West Division doubleheader.

Blain Augspurger was the hard-luck loser on the mound in the opener, allowing two earned runs on two hits and three walks. He struck out two, pitching all six innings for the Mustangs (3-10, 1-6). Tyler Fuller, Blake Neuroth, Carter Anderson, Alex Jacobson and Augspurger each had a single.

The host Spartans (8-2, 6-1) scored five runs in the third inning of game two to break it open for good. Anderson took the loss for the Mustangs, allowing five runs on six hits in 2 1/3 innings pitched.

Neuroth was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, and Anderson was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Fuller and Landen Neuroth both contributed singles in the loss.
