Tollefson’s top mark

MHS junior shatters own school record to win Iowa Alliance Conference

Abby Tollefson has been making records her own this season with Marshalltown diving, and on Tuesday the Bobcat junior stamped her name into the record books with an emphatic performance in the inaugural Iowa Alliance Conference meet.

A score of 534.65 points in the 11-dive meet was not only her personal best but a Marshalltown record. The performance won her the conference title by over 100 points ahead of Ames’ Alina Markutsya’s score of 416.85.

Breaking another record after coming so close to winning the Bobcat diving invitational on Saturday was big for Tollefson and her confidence in her dives.

“I’m feeling pretty great after this meet, especially because in the last meet I felt like I hadn’t shown what I could do,” Tollefson said. “This meet I felt like I did the dives how I wanted to do them.

“There’s always room to improve. I’m proud of what I did, but I know there is more I can do.”

Bobcats head coach Angie Nelson said it was impressive to see Tollefson nail her dives with such accuracy and that the big leap she made in score was telling about just how high she can climb as a diver. Nelson noted her particular strength in the voluntary dives, something she continued from last Saturday. But her leap in polish was notable and a sign of her improvement this season.

“She’s a solid diver, she has a solid list and she has amazing skill,” Nelson said. “She puts a lot of height on her dives and she cleans them up.

“She’s got a lot of polish and she’s all that.”

Tollefson wasn’t the only Bobcat to shine on Tuesday, as the hosts ended up with three top-five finishers and medalists.

Senior Kaisa Stanley smashed her personal-best with a score of 410.3 to finish in third — just six points out of a second-place finish on the night — while sophomore Kate Hauser took fifth place following a career-best 371.8 score. All three earned All-Conference honors.

For Stanley, it’s a breakthrough in score that has been a long time coming, Nelson said.

“I think that’s really important,” Nelson said. “The dives that she did hit, she hit big enough that she could overcome those couple little bobbles. This is the culmination of many years and many hours of hard work.”

Hauser is in her first varsity season and Nelson has mentioned her potential multiple times throughout the year. Her previous best score was a 314 in the diving invite last Saturday, and the 57-point jump signaled a step in the right direction.

Nelson said there’s still things for Hauser to work on when it comes to technical skill, and the team hopes to get her to hit the water closer to the diving board. But she added that the talent is there.

“Kate’s super talented,” Nelson said. “Fundamentally Kate has some things that she can really move up on. The exciting thing about Kate is her score could climb another 40 or 50 points easily with just a few fundamental changes.

“Once she gets something in her head, it’s going to happen.”

Seniors Grace Bethel and Kiersten Randall competed in their final regular season events for the Bobcats as part of the junior varsity program.

Marshalltown hosts the IAC conference swim meet Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at the Linda Bloom Natatorium.
