REGIONAL GIRLS GOLF: Comets chalk up third straight trip to state

ANITA — The BCLUW girls’ golf team locked up its third straight trip to the Class 1A state meet by winning the Region 2 title on Wednesday at Crestwood Hills Golf Course by a cozy 19-stroke margin.

The Comets qualified with a winning team score of 378 and Newell-Fonda advanced with its runner-up round of 397.

BCLUW was led by Lindsay Beeghly, who qualified individually with her third-place round of 83. Fellow senior Sydney Anderson shot a 94, junior Delaney Legg carded a 99 and sophomore Gracie Andrews added a 102 for the team’s fourth score.

Lean McEwen (103) and Marissa Schnathorst (112) also competed for the Comets, who will visit Marshalltown’s American Legion Memorial Golf Course on May 23-24 for the 1A state tournament.

Redhawks finish fifth at regional final

MONTICELLO — The North Tama girls’ golf team was denied qualification for the Class 1A state meet after finishing fifth at the Region 4 meet on Wednesday at Monticello Golf Course.

The Redhawks finished just one stroke out of third place, shooting a 404 that trailed Durant and West Branch (403). Easton Valley (352) and East Buchanan (376) claimed the team qualifier spots.

Junior Kylie Calderwood carded a 93 to lead North Tama, placing 12th overall. She was just three shots back of tying for the final qualifying individual spot.

Seniors Larissa Morrison (102) and Kinsley Even (103) were joined by junior Danika Wrage (106) in contributing scoring rounds for the Redhawks. Brooke Bradley (116) and Briar Blake (118) also competed in the regional final.

Spartans secure spot at 2A state tourney

GRUNDY CENTER — The defending Class 1A champion Grundy Center girls’ golf team got back to state by qualifying for the 2A tournament at Wednesday’s Region 4 meet at Town & Country Golf Club.

The Spartans were a distant runner-up to regional champion Sumner-Fredericksburg, which shot a winning 334 team total led by medalist Chloe Bolte’s 6-under-par round of 66. Grundy Center was second at 369, just five strokes ahead of Denver (374) with Jesup (387) taking fourth.

Leah Larson led the Spartans with a 91, Avery Knutsen shot 92, and Holly Lubbert and Ashlyn Kuiper both carded 93 to help get the team back to state. Kahlynn Draper (95) and Isabelle Ruth (98) also played for Grundy Center.

The 2A state tournament is May 23-24 at Cedar Point Golf Course in Boone.

Pfantz leads West Marshall back to 2A state meet

LEON — Allie Pfantz shot a medalist round of 6-over-par 78 and the West Marshall girls’ golf team returned to the state meet with a runner-up finish at the Class 2A Region 3 tournament on Wednesday at Leon Country Club.

The Trojans, who were last year’s 2A state runner-up, finished with a 348 team score and trailed only Van Meter (346) in Wednesday’s regional final.

Pfantz and fellow senior Avery Stanley qualified as individuals for finishing in the top six, as Stanley shot an 85. Sophomores Rachel Randall and Sienna Edler added rounds of 89 and 96, respectively, to round out the Trojans’ team scoring.

Natalie Nichols (103) and Riley Randall (107) also competed for West Marshall, which qualified comfortably as the runner-up with Red Oak (375) a distant third.

The 2A state meet is May 23-24 at Cedar Point Golf Course in Boone.

STC stopped short of state at regionals

MANCHESTER — The South Tama girls’ golf team was shut out of state, finishing seventh at Wednesday’s Class 3A Region 5 tournament at Pin Oaks Pub Links.

The Trojans totaled a 408 to finish seventh out of 12 teams, ending just three strokes back of Benton in fifth (405). Dubuque Wahlert (341) and host West Delaware (359) qualified for the 3A state meet May 23-24 at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls.

Individually, Aubrey Dolezal came in 12th overall to lead South Tama with a round of 93. Madison Hitchcock (102) and Maddalyn Brown (103) were one stroke apart, and Mady Boriskey added the final counting round of 110 for the Trojans.

Taylor Dolezal (114) and Ella Kopsa (116) also competed for STC.
