SPORTS SHORTS: Bobcat girls pile up three pins at Ottumwa

OTTUMWA — The Marshalltown girls’ wrestling team won three out of seven matches in a 28-24 loss to Ottumwa on Tuesday night at Evans Middle School.

Bobcat grapplers Rhayne Morales, Genevieve Lantigua and Meya Roberts scored back-to-back-to-back pins to account for 18 of Marshalltown’s 24 team points. MHS received one forfeit and issued one back to the host Bulldogs, who won three matches by fall and another by major decision.

Morales pinned Zaira Garcia Gonzalez in 1 minute, 22 seconds, Lantigua flattened Sophie Mendibles in 1:52, and Roberts logged the shortest time on the mat with her 45-second pin of Delilah Subsin.

The Bobcat girls go to the regional tournament on Friday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Wrestling begins at 11 a.m.

Fifth-ranked Trojans take down Cubs a second time

STATE CENTER — The Class 3A No. 5 West Marshall girls’ basketball team completed a season sweep of Nevada with Tuesday’s 57-48 victory over the Cubs in Heart of Iowa Conference action.

Katy Reyerson racked up 20 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, four steals and one blocked shot to lead the Trojans (16-1, 9-1) to their eighth straight win. Keatan Pfantz poured in another 13 points and Bella Borgos had 12 more as West Marshall overcame a two-point halftime deficit with a 38-27 second-half advantage.

Lauren Solberg, Lily Zahnd and Reese Jensen chipped in four points apiece, and Solberg pulled down six rebounds for West Marshall.

Nevada (6-10, 5-5) was led by Avery Hinson with 12 points and Emma Strottman with 10 points.

West Marshall scores first HOIAC win over Nevada

STATE CENTER — The West Marshall boys’ basketball team beat Nevada for the first time since rejoining the Heart of Iowa Conference, beating the Cubs 60-54 in Tuesday’s league tilt.

The Trojans (7-10, 4-6) had lost their previous five matchups with Nevada by an average of 28.8 points per game. The Cubs won this season’s first pairing, 64-33, on Dec. 9.

Owen Siegert led West Marshall with 15 points, TJ Schuler had 12 points and nine rebounds, and Andrew Tollefson tallied 11 points. Grahm Nason added seven points, 10 rebounds and five assists, and Peyton Hart added seven points in the team’s four win in its last five games.

Easton Gray led Nevada (9-6, 7-3) with 14 points.

Trio of Trojan girls score silver at WaMaC wrestling

WILLIAMSBURG — The South Tama girls’ wrestling team scored three silver medals and placed seventh out of 11 teams at the WaMaC Conference Tournament on Monday night at Williamsburg High School.

Maeley Elsbury, Abagail Chyma and Autumn Elsbury each placed second at their respective weight classes, helping the Trojans pile up 82 team points. Independence won the WaMaC crown with 220 points, Vinton-Shellsburg (183) was second and Williamsburg (146) was third.

Maeley Elsbury, ranked third by IAwrestle, moved her season record to 40-2 after a 2-1 day that included two wins by fall before a 7-6 loss to No. 2 Dakota Whitman of Independence in the 135-pound championship match.

Chyma’s record moved to 25-13 for the year, going 1-1 with a win by fall before a third-period loss by fall to Mount Vernon’s Gracie Pickney in the 155 title bout.

Autumn Elsbury, ranked seventh, improved to 32-4 with a 2-1 showing that featured two first-period pins before a nailbiting 2-1 loss to No. 4 Libby Dix of Mount Vernon in the 170 finale.

Jamy Dolash placed fifth for STC at 190, Addison Klenk came in seventh at 110, while Taylor Johannsen did not place at 115.

STC second, EM/GMG sixth in Mustang Duals

LE GRAND — The South Tama boys’ wrestling team finished second and host East Marshall/GMG came in sixth out of eight teams at the Mustang Duals on Saturday.

South Tama went 3-0 in pool play and closed the meet with a 46-27 loss to Benton Community in the title match. STC defeated North Polk (48-28), Collins-Maxwell (82-0) and East Marshall/GMG (57-18) to advance to the title round.

The Trojans were led by five wrestlers who finished the day with 4-0 records: Cale Graff (106 pounds), Eligh Branan (120), Amare Chavez (126), MaCael Bear (132) and Gavin Bridgewater (195). Graff posted two pins and won twice by forfeit, and Branan had one pin, one technical fall and two minor decisions.

Chavez, ranked second by IAwrestle, had three pins and a decision, while 12th-ranked Bear had two pins, a forfeit and a decision. Bridgewater, the new No. 1 at 195, had three pins and received a forfeit.

East Marshall/GMG was defeated by Gilbert in the fifth-place match, 45-27, after going 1-2 in pool play. The Mustangs beat Collins-Maxwell (57-12) before losing to North Polk (52-15) and South Tama (57-18).

The Mustangs were led by three wrestlers with 3-1 records for the day: Wyatt Benson (120), Ty Fuller (145) and Drew Wheater (182). All three of Benson’s wins came by fall, while Fuller recorded one pin and received two forfeits. Wheater received a forfeit and twice won by decision.

Kiburis scores 35 as G-R edges Aplington-Parkersburg

REINBECK — Gladbrook-Reinbeck senior William Kiburis scored a game-high 35 points and led Class 1A No. 5 Gladbrook-Reinbeck to a showstopping 83-80 victory over Class 2A No. 1 Aplington-Parkersburg on Tuesday.

G-R scored 25 points in the first quarter and held an eight-point lead, but after A-P scored 19 in the second to cut the gap to 37-36 at half it was a close game until the final buzzer. Kiburis went 11-for-20 from the field and hit two 3-pointers while going 11-for-15 from the free-throw line to lead the Rebels.

Luke Riffey scored 15 points for G-R and hit three 3-pointers, while Caleb Egesdal scored 11. Drew Eilers added 10 points. Both teams shot over 50 percent from the floor, but G-R made the most of its opportunities on the glass. The Rebels had 30 rebounds, led by 12 from Eilers and nine from Kiburis. Kiburis also led the team in assists with eight, while Egesdal dished out five of his own.

A-P’s leading scorer was Garrett Hampen with 25.

GMG girls’ basketball team reaches 10 wins

COLO — GMG girls’ basketball hit the 10-win mark with a good portion of the season left to go Tuesday night, defeating Colo-NESCO 54-30 on the road and moving to 10-6 on the season and 7-3 in the Iowa Star South. Colo-NESCO drops to 2-13 and 2-9.

The Wolverines had a strong first quarter and led 15-6, adding to the lead with a 17-12 second frame to hold a 32-18 advantage at the halftime break.

GMG held the Royals to just 12 points in the second half, leaning on the strong team defense while slowly pulling away for the comfortable final margin.

Reese Dieleman was the only Wolverine in double-figures with 17 points, going 7-for-15 from the floor. She also had nine rebounds. Adelyn Sienknecht and Dylan Mathern had nine points apiece while Maecyn Lewis and Marriah Stonewall scored six each.

Sienknecht had a game-high eight assists, followed closely by Mathern with five. Lewis grabbed seven rebounds and Stonewall had six.

Wolverines drop conference tilt with Colo-NESCO

COLO — A slow offensive start was too much for GMG boys’ basketball to overcome on Tuesday, as a 64-39 loss to the Colo-NESCO Royals dropped the Wolverines to 6-10 on the season and 5-5 in Iowa Star South action.

GMG trailed 22-5 after the first quarter and struggled on offense all night long without Jabari Woodbury, finishing the game at just 24 percent from the floor. Colin Teske was the only GMG player to reach double figures with 13 points on 5-for-12 shooting with two 3-pointers. Kaleb Gill scored six points and Noah Teske had five.

Noah added 12 rebounds, a game high, while Brayden Duden had eight boards.
