Petty re-sets record as MHS swims state prelims
Dane Petty
IOWA CITY — Marshalltown High School senior Dane Petty squeezed another 18-hundreths of a second out of his 100-yard backstroke and re-broke his new school record Friday at the Iowa High School State Swimming Meet at the University of Iowa’s Campus Recreation and Wellness Center.
Petty capped the Bobcats’ four preliminary swims by clocking in at 55.16 seconds for 22nd place out of 32 state qualifiers. He entered seeded 18th, but still managed to shave a little time off the school-record clocking he established a week earlier (55.34).
Lincoln Barker posted Marshalltown’s top result out of four preliminary swims on Friday, finishing 21st in the 500 freestyle. He entered seeded 17th and lost position even though he cut one and a half seconds off his qualifying time, touching up in 4:53.81. Petty placed 26th in the same race, hitting the wall in 4:57.23.
Charlie Gilbertson moved up the most of Marshalltown’s four preliminary swimmers, improving five positions from his seeding in the 100 butterfly. Gilbertson, who was the last of 32 qualifiers in the 100 butterfly, finished 27th with a time of 55.13. It was 1.01 seconds faster than his seed time.
The Bobcats are back in action with today’s 12:30 p.m. finals, competing in all three relays on the University of Iowa campus.
