SPORTS SHORTS: Dean, Tyynismaa to run in Drake Relays finals

DES MOINES — Two alums from the Times-Republican coverage area qualified for event finals on Saturday afternoon at the Drake Relays in Des Moines.
Deonté Dean, a Marshalltown grad now running at the University of Northern Iowa, qualified for the men’s university division 4×100-meter relay finals with his Panther teammates after they turned in the second-fastest qualifying time in the prelims at 39.90. Dean anchored the relay with Tinashe Chigudu, Luke Meyers and Isaiah Trousil passing around the Panther baton. Minnesota had the fastest prelim time at 39.39. The finals are scheduled for 3:13 p.m.
JoJo Tyynismaa, a South Tama alum competing with Wartburg College, will run in the women’s 4×100 college division finals for the Knights, with the gun scheduled to go off at 4:10 p.m. The Knights qualified with the eighth-fastest time in Friday morning’s prelims; Addie Parker, Tyynismaa, Olivia Tollari and Mikala Sidney clocked in at 47.88. Minnesota State has the top prelim time at 44.91.
Central’s Silver nearly breaks school steeple record at Drake
DES MOINES — Central College sophomore Caleb Silver, a BCLUW alum now competing with the Dutch men’s track and field team, placed 14th in 8:57.55 the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Drake Relays at Drake Stadium on Thursday night.
Silver’s time was 16-hundredths of a second slower than the all-time best steeplechase time in Central history of 8:57.39, achieved by Mark Fairley in 2018. Silver’s performance obliterates his previous best time of 9:10.50 in the event, which at the time was still the school’s second-best all-time performance in the event.
Craig Nowak, competing unattached, won the event in 8:35.27.
Weaver low man for Mustangs
WATERLOO — East Marshall’s Cody Weaver had the low score with a 1-over 37 at Gates Park Golf Course in a triangular with the Mustangs, Waterloo Columbus and Hudson on Thursday night.
The Mustangs finished third in the team race with a 199, trailing Columbus (158) and Hudson (159).
Jackson Bidwell shot 44, Matthew Wenner 57, and Triton Maddox 61 for the rest of the Mustang scoring.
GC/G-R boys blank Go-Hawks
WAVERLY — Class 1A No. 1 Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys soccer posted a seventh-consecutive shutout, 2-0 winners at Waverly-Shell Rock on Thursday night.
Tyler Nolder and Clay Saak had the goals for GC/G-R, with Aiden Hunemuller adding an assist. Max Anderson made one save in net.
GC/G-R (10-0) played at Belmond-Klemme on Friday.
Calderwood medals for Redhawk girls
TRAER — Kylie Calderwood matched a season-low with a 46 to earn medalist honors for North Tama girls golf in a meet with Waterloo Christian at Traer Golf Club on Thursday.
Redhawk teammate Larissa Morrison followed with a 52 as runner-up medalist. Kensington Pick shot 53 and Brooke Bradley and Kinsley Even turned in 56s. Danika Wrage contributed a 63.
Waterloo Christian did not field a full team. Ava Rice paced the Regents with a 53.
Schrier guides Redhawks past Regents
TRAER — Michael Schrier posted the low round of the day with a 38 as North Tama boys golf snuck past Waterloo Christian, 171-173, at Traer Golf Club on Thursday.
Lucas DeBoef had a 42 for the Redhawks, Levi Zobel contributed a 43 and Tyler Popelka was the final scorer with a 48. Case Monat and Drake Podhajsky contributed a 52 and 57, respectively, as non-scorers.
Aaron Zwack and Drew Wagner each shot 42 to lead Waterloo Christian.
Timm wins two for STC boys tennis
MARION — Kaden Timm was a double winner for South Tama boys tennis in a 7-2 loss at Marion on Thursday night.
Timm won at No. 1 singles against Donny Long, 10-2. Timm and Austyn Ellenbecker won a tiebreaker at No. 1 doubles against Long and Ethan Hangartner, 11-10 (7-4).
The Trojans fell to 3-10 on the season and traveled to Newton on Friday.
Boyer medals for G-R girls golf
REINBECK — Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s Lauren Boyer won a cardback tiebreaker to claim medalist honors at Oakleaf Golf & Country Club on Thursday.
Boyer beat out AGWSR’s Avery Lafrenz after both shot 56s on the day. AGWSR won the dual by a 241-263 margin.
The Rebels also got counting scores from Nattalee Brinkman (66), Mallory Wrage (69) and Delaney Slifer-Dew (72). Kennedy Brant also shot a 72.
Fleshner leads Rebel boys golf against AGWSR
REINBECK — Cole Fleshner scored a 43 to lead Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys golf in a dual with AGWSR won by the Cougars, 170-192, at Oakleaf Golf & Country Club on Thursday.
Fleshner was one stroke back of a trio of Cougars that finished with 42s — Bo Gerbracht won medalist while Easton Kerns was the runner-up medalist.
Kadyn Schick added a 48 for the Rebels and Austin Gehring followed with a 49; Michael Boyd pitched in the final score for the team with a 52. Luke Sienknecht and Isaac Baer were close behind with non-counting scores of 53 and 54.
