ANKENY — Marshalltown sophomore Natalie Henson earned her first career individual state girls golf medal with a ninth-place finish at the Class 4A tournament at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny on Friday.

Henson followed her first day score of 76 with a 75 on day two for a 9-over-par 151 total for the tournament. Linn-Mar’s Morgan Rupp was state medalist, shooting back-to-back 70s for a 2-under 140, one stroke ahead of Cedar Rapids Washington’s Jane Petersen.

It was her second time competing at the state meet, and improved 20 strokes from her last two-day stint at Otter Creek as part of last year’s third-place Bobcat team.

Teammate and fellow sophomore Gaby Estabrook also made her return to Otter Creek and the state tournament, finishing 23rd overall with a 170 total, following an 84 in her opening round with an 86.

That, too, is an improvement over last year, taking 14 strokes off her 2022 rounds at state.

Pleasant Valley secured its first-ever state title in girls golf with a two-day total of 641. Cedar Rapids Washington finished in second place with a 658 and West Des Moines Valley was third at 663.
