SPORTS SHORTS: Mustang softball doubled up by Newton

LE GRAND — The East Marshall softball team suffered its fourth-straight loss, falling 6-3 to visiting Newton on Tuesday night.

The Cardinals (3-1) got a superlative pitching performance from Hailey Sumpter, who struck out 15 in her five-hitter. The Mustangs (1-4) were issued three walks and two hit batters, scoring two earned runs.

East Marshall hurler Morgan Neuroth allowed seven hits and five earned runs on five walks with 10 strikeouts. Newton scored twice in both the sixth and seventh innings to gain breathing room in an otherwise tight contest.

Peyton Durr had an RBI double in the sixth and a run-scoring single in the seventh for Newton. Sumpter also had two hits, including a double, for the Cardinals.

Rayne McIlrath led East Marshall with a two-hit night at the plate. She drove in Neuroth with a single in the third and pinch-hitter Libby Atcher with a double in the fifth. McIlrath walked and scored on a Peyton Grabenbauer double in the seventh.

Ava Bringmann and Mylie Rasmusson also had hits for East Marshall.

BCLUW softball rallies past Baxter in extras

BAXTER — The BCLUW softball team rallied from behind to force extra innings, finally overtaking Baxter for an 8-5, 10-inning victory in Tuesday’s Iowa Star Conference South Division clash.

Baxter (0-5, 0-4) led 5-3 after two innings, but the Comets (3-2, 3-1) collected solo runs in the fourth and sixth frames to tie. In the 10th, Raegan Crawford singled and scored when Grace Farnsworth’s sacrifice bunt was misplayed. Morgan Bergman followed with an RBI double.

Bergman, Crawford and winning pitcher Klayre Gallentine had two hits apiece. Gallentine hit a two-run double and pitched all 10 innings for BCLUW, allowing one earned run on 15 hits and three walks while striking out 10.

Comets can’t contain Bolts in conference baseball

BAXTER — The BCLUW baseball team held Baxter within striking distance until the Bolts broke loose with a seven-run eruption in the sixth inning of Tuesday’s 10-1 Baxter victory.

BCLUW (0-6, 0-4) scored first in this Iowa Star Conference South Division showdown, as Walker Ashton came across on a groundout by Calvin Zoske in the top of the first inning.

Baxter (4-3, 3-2) gained the lead with two runs in the second and piled on with a run in the fourth and a back-breaking seven-spot in the sixth.

Ashton took the loss for the Comet pitching staff, allowing just two earned runs on three hits and six walks over 5 1/3 innings. He struck out five.

Cayden McLeland hit a triple, while Logan Scafferi and Daniel Zoske each added a single for the Comets.

Trojans baseball takes two from Rebels

STATE CENTER — West Marshall won a pair of one-sided contests with Gladbrook-Reinbeck (5-6) in a Memorial Day twinbill at Schilling Field on Monday.

The Trojans (8-2), ranked 10th in Class 2A, won 10-0 and 14-4, with both games ending in five innings.

In the first game, Owen Siegert struck out 12 in a two-hitter with only one walk. Siegert added two RBI, as did DJ Ridout, and five other Trojans contributed one RBI each, including AJ Dee with a solo home run. West Marshall poured on seven runs in the fifth to invoke the mercy rule.

Trojan sophomore Caden Pfantz notched his first career pitching victory in Game 2 with three innings pitched, allowing one earned run on one hit with three walks and five strikeouts.

DJ Ridout was 2-for-4, including his first career home run, and finished with five runs batted in. Siegert added a solo shot and Clay Cuva and Evan Siegert contributed an RBI each.

Nick Tscherter knocked in two runs for the Rebels in the second game and Luke Riffey added a double and an RBI.
