Bobcats bat around to salvage divisional softball split

WATERLOO — Marshalltown eighth-grader Briley Danielson put out Waterloo East’s offensive spark and stopped the Trojans from firing up another big inning to help the Bobcat softball team split Monday’s Iowa Alliance Conference doubleheader.

Waterloo East (3-15, 1-7) captured its first IAC North Division win in the first game, 9-4, and the Trojans seemed poised to pounce on the second game, too. Danielson took over in the pitcher’s circle for classmate Emma Stupp and snuffed out East’s fast start en route to a 19-7 triumph.

Freshman Kinsley Bowie connected for her first varsity home run as the Bobcats (5-12, 3-5) scored in each of their seven at-bats in the second game. MHS took a 9-2 lead after an eight-run second, but Waterloo East’s first three batters reached base in the bottom half. Danielson got the final two outs and pitched the remaining five frames, allowing just three runs on six hits and four walks while striking out seven.

Kate Sandvick went 4-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBIs, while Bowie was 2-for-2 with a homer and three RBIs. Kennedy Feldman, Ava Kusserow and Stupp had two hits apiece as the Bobcats totaled 16 hits in the win.

Stupp’s solo homer gave MHS a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning of Game 1, but the Trojans tallied seven runs in the fifth keyed by an Aalonna Ford homer and three Bobcat errors. Karsyn Price took the loss in the circle, allowing three earned runs on five hits and six walks while striking out seven.

Gianna Baune and Stupp both had two hits, including a double, while Sandvick and Danielson both had a double.
