Trojans, Mustangs both go 2-0

STATE CENTER — The rank of Rose Festival Tournament champion will have to wait.

The West Marshall and East Marshall softball teams both went 2-0 on Saturday, each defeating Marshalltown (5-18) and Shenandoah (5-13) in a four-team tournament of sorts. The Marshall County foes won’t face either other until June 27 in Le Grand, so the mythical Rose Festival crown won’t be donned until then.

West Marshall climbed above .500 for the first time this season with wins of 9-4 over Shenandoah and 13-1 over Marshalltown. The Trojans (11-10) won for the fifth time in their last six games thanks to Saturday’s sweep.

East Marshall (13-9) beat the Bobcats 9-0 and had to score three times in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally past Shenandoah 6-5.

West Marshall scored the game’s final five runs to beat Shenandoah 9-4. The score was tied at 4-all before the host Trojans scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the sixth to take the victory.

Ciera Randall and Jillian Karsjen both homered for West Marshall. Karsjen finished 2-for-4 with a triple, a home run and four RBIs, while Lillian Fischer and Lily Zahnd had two hits apiece.

Mara Tarbell pitched five innings for the win, allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out three. Aubree Greenwood allowed one hit and one walk over two scoreless innings of relief, also striking out three.

Jenna Burdorf, daughter of head coach Aaron Burdorf, went 4-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Aaron is a former middle school history teacher and varsity baseball coach at West Marshall who is now the head softball coach and K-8 principal at Shenandoah.

West Marshall’s offense erupted against Marshalltown, scoring five times in the first inning and six times in the fourth to finish off the win by the run rule, 13-1.

Ciera Randall homered again, while Riley Randall was 2-for-3 with a double and four RBIs. Rachel Randall finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and Amelia Ranson was 2-for-2 with three runs scored and three RBIs.

Tarbell tossed three innings for the win, allowing one run on four hits and one hit batter while striking out one. Taylor Thomas got the final three outs, striking out two.

Emma Stupp took the loss in the circle for Marshalltown, allowing four runs in just two-thirds of an inning. She walked three and hit a batter.

Briley Danielson doubled home Bella Avise for Marshalltown’s lone run in the top of the third. Ava Kusserow followed with a double of her own.

Avise and Stupp each hit singles to round out the Bobcats’ four hits.

Marshalltown got just three hits in a 9-0 loss to East Marshall. Morgan Neuroth struck out 12 and walked one in the complete-game victory. Only three runs were earned to the Bobcat pitching staff as MHS committed five errors.

Gianna Baune, Danielson and Stupp had the Bobcats’ only hits, including doubles for Danielson and Stupp. Karsyn Price took the loss, allowing five runs — two earned — on five hits and four walks while striking out one in 4 1/3 innings.

Rayne McIlrath and Peyton Grabenbauer each accounted for two of the Mustangs’ eight hits.

The Mustangs found themselves trailing the Fillies of Shenandoah 4-1 before their rally began.

East Marshall pieced together five consecutive hits in both the sixth and seventh innings to score five of their six runs in a 6-5 win.

In the sixth, McIlrath and Grabenbauer singled, Vaeda Bryan doubled, and Makayla Hala followed with a single. Mylie Rasmusson drove in a run with her hit, but Hala was thrown out trying to score the tying run.

Shenandoah scratched out an insurance run in the seventh, but the Mustangs’ bats answered again. Alivia Neuroth led off with a single, Neuroth got a hit, and Ava Bringmann added an RBI single. McIlrath followed with a run-scoring double, and Grabenbauer plated her as the game-winning run.

Grabenbauer earned the win, allowing one earned run on seven hits and four walks while striking out eight.
