SPORTS SHORTS: West Marshall takes care of Blue Devils on Senior Night

STATE CENTER — The Class 2A No. 8 West Marshall baseball team got out to an early lead and eased to an 8-2 victory over Martensdale-St. Marys in Thursday’s non-conference clash.

The Trojans (24-6) rode the right arm of Grayson Shaver for all seven innings, as the junior hurler allowed just four hits, two walks and a hit batter to contrast 10 strikeouts in the complete-game performance.

West Marshall’s lone senior, Eduardo Plascencia, made his first career start and played first base. He recorded five putouts, one assist, and also scored a run for the offense.

AJ Dee and Caden Pfantz both had two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs for the Trojans. Clay Cuva and Beckham DeSotel both went 1-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored. Noah DeSotel also singled and scored.

Charlie Tiano had two hits to lead Martensdale-St. Marys (8-18).

Rebels finish regular season in convincing fashion

DUNKERTON — The Gladbrook-Reinbeck baseball team closed the regular season with a 14-1 victory over Dunkerton that went the full seven innings in Thursday’s non-conference contest.

Austen Mathern allowed only one hit and two walks over three shutout innings for the win, striking out five. Austin Gehring scattered six hits and one hit batter over four innings, giving up an unearned run while striking out two.

Senior catcher Nick Tscherter powered the offense by going 3-for-5 with a triple and five RBIs for the Rebels (24-11). Austin Vaverka also had three hits, scored twice and drove in a run. William Kiburis was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and three runs scored, while Caleb Egesdal was 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored.

Ledger Dalton drove in the lone run for Dunkerton (6-12).

Redhawk baseball rebuffed by Hudson in finale

TRAER — The North Tama baseball team suffered a 7-2 loss to Hudson in Thursday’s regular season finale.

Hudson (17-10) led 7-0 before the host Redhawks (9-12) got on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Gavin Rausch was 2-for-3 to lead the North Tama offense, driving in a run. Tyrus Luker had the Redhawks’ only other hit. Henry Hansen and Tyler Popelka both scored a run.

Hansen took the loss for the Redhawk pitching staff, allowing three runs on two hits and three walks over 1 2/3 innings. He struck out three.

West Marshall softball spurns Spartans, 5-1

STATE CENTER — West Marshall broke open a close game with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat Grundy Center 5-1 in Thursday’s non-conference softball contest.

Aubree Greenwood went the distance in the circle for the Trojans (13-15), allowing one run on six hits and one walk. She struck out three.

Josie deNeui led the West Marshall offense, going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Lillian Fischer was 1-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Ciera Randall was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Her courtesy runner Savanna Davenport scored twice.

Grundy Center pitcher Maddy Hendershot allowed five hits and eight walks while also hitting a batter. She struck out six in the complete-game loss.

Hendershot and Lucy Lebo both had two hits to lead the Spartans (7-22). Lebo doubled and scored on an Allison Koch single. Lauren Zajac had Grundy Center’s only other hit.

Comets can’t hang with PCM, lose eighth straight

CONRAD — The BCLUW softball team suffered its eighth straight loss with a 12-2 defeat at the hands of PCM in Thursday’s regular-season finale.

The Mustangs (16-8) broke a 1-all tie with six runs in the top of the third inning and never looked back.

Klayre Gallentine went the distance in the loss, allowing eight earned runs on 10 hits and four walks, striking out two. The BCLUW defense committed five errors.

Cassie Nason was 2-for-4 with solo home run and two RBIs. Grace Farnsworth was 2-for-4 with a double. Raegan Crawford, Morgan Bergman, Maliah Gunderson and Marissa Schnathorst each added a hit for the Comets (9-18).

Mustangs make quick work of Falcons

LE GRAND — The East Marshall softball team tallied eight hits and capitalized on nine total walks in a 12-2, five-inning triumph over Aplington-Parkersburg on Thursday night.

Morgan Neuroth pitched a four-hitter, striking out six while walking none for the complete-game victory for the Mustangs (3-20). The Falcons’ first three batters had hits to account for A-P’s 2-0 lead, but the Mustangs (19-12) scored four times in the home half, as Ava Bringmann had an RBI double and Makayla Hala added a two-run single.

Bailey Grant had a two-run single, while Vaeda Bryan ended the game early with a two-run triple. Neuroth added two of East Marshall’s eight hits, including a double.

Grundy Center gets past Pirates on the road

HUDSON — The Grundy Center baseball team closed its regular season with a 9-7 triumph over Hudson on Wednesday night.

The Spartans (17-6) used a six-run eruption in the top of the fifth to take a 9-5 lead that endured the remainder.

Brody Zinkula finished 2-for-5 at the plate with a double, a run and three RBIs to lead Grundy Center. Brayden Davie also had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run. Patrick Brown III was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

Tanner Laube earned the win on the mound, throwing three innings in relief.

G-R offense finds its footing against Denver

DENVER — The Gladbrook-Reinbeck baseball team scored in five of its six at-bats to bury Denver in six innings, 16-6, on Wednesday night.

Hudson Clark went 3-for-4 with a run scored and four RBIs, while Luke Riffey was 3-for-4 with a run and two RBIs to lead the Rebels (23-11). Logan Giesking was 2-for-3 with four runs scored, and Isaac Clark was 2-for-2 with a double, three RBIs and four runs scored.

G-R was the beneficiary of 16 free bases issued by Denver pitching.

Giesking went the distance on the mound, allowing 10 hits, two walks and two hit batsmen while striking out five.

DeSotel delivers as Trojans topple A-P

PARKERSBURG — Noah DeSotel drove in the go-ahead run with a seventh-inning single and the Class 2A No. 8 West Marshall baseball team beat Aplington-Parkersburg 5-4 Tuesday.

DeSotel finished 2-for-4 at the plate, while Dawson Bear was a perfect 3-for-3 with a walk. Owen Siegert was 2-for-5 with two runs scored, and Clay Cuva was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored for the Trojans (23-6).

Beckham DeSotel earned the win for three scoreless innings of relief work on the mound.

Mustangs outlast STC in non-conference baseball

TAMA — The East Marshall baseball team defeated South Tama 5-3 in Wednesday’s non-conference showdown, using a three-run rally in the sixth inning to take command.

Connor Hassin was 2-for-4 to lead the Mustangs (11-16). Alex Jacobson’s two-run double was the big blow. Brock Curtis singled and scored, while Jacob Farrington was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Carter Anderson drove in a run and scored as well, while Blake Neuroth walked three times and scored twice.

Joryn Shively earned the win on the mound, allowing one hit and two walks over four innings while striking out three. Blake Fisher pitched the final three frames, allowing two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Kyan McBride went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs to lead South Tama (4-23). Daniel Wiese was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.

Emerson Bridgewater was the hard-luck loser, allowing just two runs on one hit but four walks while striking out eight over five innings. The Trojans made four errors.

Clarksville clips Comets in nine innings

BEAMAN — The BCLUW baseball team rallied to force extra innings only to surrender Clarksville’s first win of the season, a 2-1, nine-inning loss in Monday’s Iowa Star Conference contest.

Clarksville (1-16) scored in the top of the first and not again until the ninth, with BCLUW (2-16) collecting its only run in the bottom of the seventh.

Walker Ashton did his best to keep the Comets in the game, going 7 2/3 innings on the mound before running into the pitch count limit. He allowed four hits and two walks while striking out 14.

Cayden McLeland led off the home half of the seventh with a triple, and he scored on an errant throw to third base. He took the loss in relief of Ashton, surrendering Clarksville’s run in the ninth.

McLeland finished 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Comets. Hayden Schleisman had two hits while Cael Keller, Calvin Zoske and Daniel Zoske had one hit apiece.

East Marshall takes two from AGWSR in league play

ACKLEY — The East Marshall baseball team closed out its NICL West Division schedule with a sweep of AGWSR (3-15, 2-10), winning 12-0 and 8-2 on Monday night.

In the opener, Carter Anderson scattered four hits and one walk over five innings for the win, striking out six. Jacob Farrington led the Mustang offense, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBIs. Blake Neuroth, Tyler Fuller and Alex Jacobson each had two hits as well.

Connor Kriegel and Xavier Slifer combined on a three-hitter to pitch the Mustangs (10-15, 5-6) to an 8-2 victory in the nightcap.

Fuller went 2-for-3 with a double, a run and two RBIs, while Kriegel was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Farrington was 1-for-3 with three runs scored.
