Too many turnovers for Bobcats to compete

Frankie Long

URBANDALE — The Marshalltown girls’ basketball team was held to single-digit scoring in each period of an eventual 60-18 loss at the hands of Urbandale on Friday night.

The Bobcats were unable to overcome a season-high 36 turnovers in the loss, falling to 1-3 after a third consecutive defeat. Urbandale (2-2) capitalized on the extra opportunities and pulled away for the win.

“We were able to handle their pressure for a quarter, but eventually we got worn down by their speed and physicality,” said MHS head coach Brian Murphy.

Freshman post Frankie Long led Marshalltown with nine points, six rebounds and two blocked shots. Millie Heitmann had five points and a team-leading four steals.

Bri Tigges paced Urbandale with 11 points while Taylor Mulligan and Lauren Salmon added nine points apiece. The J-Hawks held Marshalltown scoreless for nearly the entire second quarter.

“Overall I was proud of the way we came out in the first quarter after an emotional and physical game [Thursday] night,” Murphy said. “We showed some of the best mental poise we have all season in a tough situation.”

The Bobcats are back out on the road on Tuesday with a trip to Des Moines North.
