SPORTS SHORTS: Ninth-ranked Spartans overtake AGWSR down the stretch
ACKLEY — Karlee Lynch made a pair of free throws with 5.1 seconds left to seal the victory for Class 2A No. 9 Grundy Center, which beat the AGWSR girls’ basketball team 41-36 on Thursday night.
The Spartans (15-1, 6-0) won their 13th straight by shooting well from the free-throw line, going 9-for-12 to hold off the Cougars (8-6, 4-2). Lynch was 4-for-4 at the charity stripe and finished with six points. Lucy Lebo made a pair of 3-pointers on her way to a team-leading 10 points, while Paige Venenga chipped in with eight points.
Ava Olson and Josie Kuper scored 10 points apiece to lead AGWSR.
West Marshall boys take 2 duals at Humboldt
HUMBOLDT — West Marshall defeated Gilbert and Perry in a quadrangular at Humboldt High School on Thursday night.
The Trojans bested Gilbert 63-18 and defeated Perry 54-30 — the Humboldt hosts, ranked ninth in 2A, won 51-27 over West Marshall and finished the night 3-0.
West Marshall won five matches by fall against Gilbert, with pins for Dillon McMorran, Wade Weuve, Dawson Goodman, Luke Steward and Kinnick Geers. Shane Hanford added a tech fall at 138 and Ben Gonzalez was a 16-4 major winner at 165. The Trojans added four wins by forfeit.
In the triumph over the Bluejays, Ben Buck, Hanford, Geers and Gonzalez all won by fall and the Trojans added five wins via forfeit.
McMorran, Weuve, Goodman and Hanford scored for the Trojans against Humboldt with pinfall victories and Jon Gonzalez contributed a 3-0 decision at 113 pounds. West Marshall surrendered two open weights against the Wildcats.
MCC men take down Tritons behind 19 from Burrows
FORT DODGE — Tyler Burrows scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball team to a 72-67 victory over Iowa Central on Wednesday night.
Burrows was one of four double-digit scorers for the Tigers (7-12), who have won three in a row. Joe Scott had 15 points and a team-leading nine rebounds, Angus Ole added 14 points and six boards, and Rob Keys contributed 13 points off the bench.
Randy Latham paced Iowa Central with 17 points. ID Coleman added 11 more for the Tritons (4-14), who lost their third straight.
Tiger women fall behind Iowa Central in league loss
FORT DODGE — The Marshalltown Community College women’s basketball team got stuck in neutral at the starting line, falling behind right out of the chute in an eventual 62-46 loss to Iowa Central on Wednesday night.
Iowa Central (15-3, 7-3) stormed out to a 19-7 lead after the opening quarter and held a 39-20 advantage by halftime.
Tarah Campbell came off the bench to lead MCC with 13 points to go with eight rebounds. Destiny Sao-Martinez finished with 13 points and five boards, while Mia Sao-Martinez made three 3-pointers for nine points. Ekin Taciroglu added six points and nine boards for the Tigers (2-16, 0-10), who lost their seventh straight.
Iowa Central’s sixth-straight win was powered by 22 points from Emily Theiss.
