Bobcat boys tennis splits at Valley Invite

WEST DES MOINES — The Marshalltown boys’ tennis program has qualified for the state team tournament for three years in a row, but the Bobcats aren’t riding on the back of past accomplishments. The Bobcats have a challenging schedule again in hopes of elevating themselves enough for another postseason run.

Fifth-ranked West Des Moines Valley gave the No. 10 Bobcats their lesson on Saturday, handing MHS a 9-2 defeat in the finals of the Valley Invite at Valley Southwoods Freshman High School.

The host Tigers (3-0) handled Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln, 10-1, while Marshalltown mashed Des Moines East, 9-0, in first-round pairings, and then Valley dispatched the Bobcats in the championship match.

Marshalltown (3-2) mowed down a shorthanded Des Moines East squad in the opener, surrendering just three games in nine matches. The Bobcats rearranged their lineup to take on the Scarlets and still proved dominant. Dale Greene, Carson Snyder, Jacob Christen, Adam Boone, Parker Christen and Jacob Seberger all scored straight-set singles wins.

Parker Christen and Seberger earned their first varsity singles victories, both winning 6-0, 6-0, while more milestones were set in doubles play.

Caleb Rasmussen and Evan Roush paired up at No. 2 doubles, while Colin Jablonski and Elliot Kodis teamed up at No. 3, and both groups got their first varsity wins in 6-0, 6-0 fashion.

Isaac Seberger and Tayven Dutton took on the No. 1 doubles duties and scored a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over East’s top pairing of Eddie Hamann and Keegan Beattie-Cerverny.

Against Valley, the Bobcats were competitive in defeat. Marshalltown’s lone singles win again came from Boone at No. 6 as he battled to a 6-3, 1-6, (10-0) victory.

Marshalltown’s only doubles win came at No. 5, as Isaac Seberger and Tayven Dutton took a 6-3, 6-3 sweep over Will Larson and Jack Rogers.

\The Bobcats are back on the home courts this week with Thursday’s Iowa Alliance Conference dual against Fort Dodge and Saturday’s quadrangular with No. 8 Mason City, No. 3 Pleasant Valley and No. 1 Waukee Northwest.
