Bobcat girls get past Polar Bears, 3-2

DES MOINES — The Marshalltown girls’ soccer team snapped back from its first loss to knock down Des Moines North, 3-2, on Tuesday night at Mediacom Stadium.

The Bobcats (3-1) never trailed after scoring the match’s opening goal in the fourth minute. Sydney Kapayou’s throw-in led to a long, wind-aided shot off the left foot of Yuri Ramirez that sailed over the goalkeeper and into the net just 3 minutes, 55 seconds into the contest.

North (1-1) notched the equalizer in the 15th minute on a rocket off the left foot of Hailee McCarl, but the Bobcats regained the lead less than three minutes later. Ramirez stole the ball on the left boundary, McKenna Coleman served a cross into the goal area, Millie Heitmann deflected it and Gissel Hernandez buried it into the back of the net.

Less than three minutes into the second half, Marshalltown made it a two-goal game. Coleman secured a penalty kick when making a rush on goal off a through ball from Carroll Gomez-Reyes. North goalkeeper Brisa Medina tackled Coleman at the point of attack, prompting a penalty kick and a change in keeper, and Sara Huffman beat Aryam Salah for the goal.

Thirty minutes later, the Polar Bears pulled to within one when Haylie Weinheimer capped a long rush up the right sideline with a point-blank goal past Esme Chavez Gomez. The Bobcats held off North for the remainder to keep the 3-2 victory.

MHS travels to Fort Dodge on Friday for an Iowa Alliance Conference clash with the host Dodgers at 7:30 p.m. at Dodger Stadium.
