Bobcats batter Rams, roll to 7-0
PLEASANT HILL — It hasn’t mattered the conditions nor the opponents.
To this point in the season, the Marshalltown girls’ tennis team has delivered every time it has taken the court.
The Bobcats improved to 7-0 in dual meets this season with Monday’s 8-3 triumph over Southeast Polk, beating the Rams on their home courts.
Marshalltown captured a 4-2 lead after singles play and put the victory away with a commanding 4-1 triumph in doubles action.
Only one match during the dual went to a third set, and Marshalltown’s No. 4 singles player Claire Bohan captured that to give the Bobcats the 4-2 advantage. Bohan defeated Addison Bartels in comeback fashion, finishing off a 2-6, 6-3, (11-9) win to give MHS the momentum with doubles play already underway.
Marshalltown also got straight-set singles wins from Kennedy Feldman at No. 2, Ava Lucas at No. 3 and Halie Hohnstein at No. 6. The Bobcats pushed forward into doubles play and remained unbeaten for the season.
Rebekah Downs and Feldman forged their way to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Bre Dao and Karah Kenney at No. 1 doubles, while Lily Zahnd and Hohnstein made off with a 6-2, 7-5 triumph at No. 3. Ellie Hughes and Rachel Jones captured a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 4, while Callie Swanson and Kate Hauser swept a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 6.
“The wind was a big challenge tonight as most of the girls had some difficulty dealing with it,” said MHS head coach John Fiscus. “Claire Bohan had a great comeback at No. 4 singles, and doubles is our strength as we have only lost four matches this season.”
The Bobcats have a pair of meets left for this week, going back on the road Tuesday for a match at Des Moines Roosevelt. MHS hosts Des Moines North on Thursday at 4 p.m. at the Marshalltown Court Complex.
