The Marshalltown girls’ tennis team just keeps rolling on.

The Bobcats blasted the Ottumwa Bulldogs on Monday evening, notching their sixth win in as many meets with a 10-1 triumph at the Marshalltown Court Complex.

Marshalltown (6-0) surrendered only three sets in the match and were quick to finish off Ottumwa (0-1) after the Bulldogs managed to score one singles win and prolong the final outcome.

Nellie Morgan outlasted Kennedy Feldman in a back-and-forth battle at No. 2 singles, winning 6-4, 6-4, but Marshalltown collected the other five singles wins. Four of them came in straight sets: Rebekah Downs at No. 1, Claire Bohan at No. 4, Lily Zahnd at No. 5 and Halie Hohnstein at No. 6.

After a grueling three-set, come-from-behind win for Marshalltown’s Ava Lucas at No. 3 singles, the Bobcat doubles teams imposed their wills on the Bulldogs for a 5-0 sweep and a 10-1 dual meet win.

“Tonight the girls had to battle Ottumwa and the wind,” said MHS head coach John Fiscus. “I was very pleased and impressed with the way they all handled the pressure.”

Marshalltown’s doubles sweep was captained by its top pairing of Downs and Feldman, who dispatched Ottumwa’s Julia Cordon Diaz De Entresotos and Nellie Morgan by a 6-1, 6-2 score.

“Rebekah and Kennedy are on a roll at No. 1 doubles, which is great to see,” Fiscus said. “We’re hoping they will keep improving for regionals.”

The doubles domination included a 6-1, 6-1 win for Ellie Hughes and Rachel Jones at No. 4, a 6-2, 6-0 win for Callie Swanson and Kate Hauser at No. 5, and a 6-1, 6-2 triumph for Zahnd and Hohnstein at No. 3.

The least decisive sweep of the five came at No. 2, where Lucas and Bohan still took down Ottumwa in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.

Marshalltown begins a three-match road swing with Thursday’s dual at Des Moines Lincoln.
