SPORTS SHORTS: Drew Thelwell signs with Iowa men’s basketball

IOWA CITY — Drew Thelwell signed a scholarship tender with the University of Iowa men’s basketball team for the 2024-25 season, it was announced Wednesday by head coach Fran McCaffery. Thelwell has one year of eligibility remaining after playing four seasons at Morehead State University.

During his Eagles’ career, Thelwell averaged 7.1 points, 3.0 assists and 0.8 steals in 114 career games. He scored 810 career points, shooting 43 percent from the floor and 34.8 from 3-point range. He will graduate in May with a degree in sports management.

Thelwell helped Morehead State to two Ohio Valley Conference regular season titles and two postseason appearances — one NIT and one NCAA Tournament.

“We are excited to welcome Drew to the Hawkeye family,” said McCaffery. “Drew has a complete skill set with exceptional passing abilities and most importantly, he’s a winner. He will be a tremendous fit for our program.”

Cyclone men’s basketball adds three transfers

AMES — Iowa State head men’s basketball coach T.J. Otzelberger recently announced the addition of three transfers to the 2024-25 Iowa State roster. Seattle transfer Brandton Chatfield, Northern Iowa transfer Nate Heise and Charlotte transfer Dishon Jackson will all join the Cyclones this summer.

Chatfield is a 6-foot-10 forward who played for the Redhawks the last three seasons. He has one season of eligibility remaining after starting all 37 games for Seattle last season, ranking second on the team in rebounds per game at 5.4. He averaged 9.4 points.

Heise, a 6-5 guard, also has one season of eligibility remaining after playing for UNI the last four years. An all-Missouri Valley Conference third-team selection, Heise appeared in and started 32 of 33 games for the Panthers last season. He averaged a career-best 13.4 points per game and averaged 6.1 rebounds per game.

Jackson is a 6-11 center who has two seasons of eligibility remaining after spending three years at Washington State, where he was teammates with fellow transfer Brandton Chatfield and former Cyclone Aljaž Kunc.

Jackson started all 30 games he appeared in for the 49ers last season, averaging 11.4 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 0.9 blocks and 0.6 steals per game. He was second on the team in rebounding and third in scoring.

Prior to going to Charlotte last season, Jackson was at Washington State for three seasons. He averaged 7.2 points per game as a freshman for the Cougars.
