SPORTS SHORTS: MHS girls get eighth place at Hawkins Relays

CEDAR RAPIDS — The Marshalltown girls’ track and field squad scored 20 points in finishing eighth at the Hawkins Relays hosted Tuesday by Cedar Rapids Prairie.

The Bobcats were led by a pair of fourth-place finishes. Anessa Morrison scored fourth in the 3,00-meter run with a time of 13 minutes, 15.88 seconds, while Marshalltown’s 4×100 throwers relay placed fourth in 1:08.16. That quartet consisted of Addyson Lovelace, Alyssa Griggs-Smith, Diana Monge and Elizabeth Johnson.

The 4×400 quad of Laney Danielson, Alivia Williams, Ava Kusserow and Thalia Gallegos got fifth in a combined time of 4:32.12.

Seventh-place points went to Marshalltown’s 4×800 and 4×200 relays. In the 4×800, Zoe Weidenaar, Thalia Gallegos, Mattea Wright and Elyza Ceren finished in 11:48.92, while the 4×200 continent of Amairra Johnson, Williams, Kusserow and Danielson clocked in at 1:59.16.

Morrison was the only indlvidual to score points for MHS. She was eighth in the 1,500 (5:42.40) to go with her fourth-place finish in the 3,200.

Marshalltown’s distance medley relay team of Nadasha Mathew, Camille Ceren, Katelyn Peck and Kaitlyn Yepez placed eighth in 5:21.42, and the 4×100 foursome of Johnson, Williams, Kusserow and Danielson earned eighth in 55.24.

BCLUW track sweeps Collins-Maxwell titles

MAXWELL — BCLUW track and field claimed both the girls and boys titles at a Collins-Maxwell Co-Ed meet on Tuesday.

The Comet girls scored 142 points to beat out Interstate 35 (120) and Collins-Maxwell for the top spot; the BCLUW boys won with 139 points, finishing ahead of Collins-Maxwell (122) and West Marshall (104).

BCLUW’s girls grabbed gold in six events, including three relays — Mallori Jones, Miranda Jones, Raegan Crawford and Kalia Stover in both the 4×400 and 4×800 relays and Madison Shadlow, Brinna Benson, Crawford and Ceanna White in the distance medley. Kailan McEwen contributed a win in the shot put, Mallori Jones won the high jump and Klayre Gallentine was the 100-meter hurdles champion.

Meskwaki’s girls were sixth with 31 points and GMG finished tied for seventh with 19 points. Sia Bear won the long jump for Meskwaki and Makayla Pendleton led the Wolverines with a third-place showing in the discus.

The BCLUW boys also won six events on Tuesday, including four golds for Cael Keller and Cayden White. Keller won individually in the 400-meter dash and long jump while White won the open 800. They also contributed to winning 4×400, 4×800 and distance medley relay teams — Keller, Nicholas Reed, Ryan Busch and White won the 4×400, Keller, Reed, Kevin Hill and White captured the 4×800 and Alex Paxson, Carter Gallentine and Hill set up White for the winning anchor in the distance medley.

West Marshall’s boys had three winners on Tuesday — Preston Reese in the 110 hurdles, Luke Steward in the discus throw and Gabe Degelau, Kinnick Geers, Ben Gonzalez and Erick Rosas Canchola in the sprint medley relay.

GMG scored 28 points for seventh in the boys standings, Meskwaki had 10 points in eighth.

GC/G-R boys smash Northeast Iowa United

REINBECK — Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys soccer made short work of Northeast Iowa United in an 11-0 win Tuesday at Gladbrook-Reinbeck High School.

Hudson Clark and Logan Stice had three goals each for the Rebels (4-0) in a game that ended via the mercy rule at halftime. Isaac Clark added two goals and Treyvon Herron, Trevor Mathern and Kaden Kauffman all scored once. Isaac and Hudson Clark each had two assists; Dreyson Morgan, Clay Saak and Kauffman each added one assist.
