SPORTS SHORTS: Spartan girls win home invite

GRUNDY CENTER — Grundy Center girls track and field won seven events and cruised to the team title at their home Spartan Girls Invite on Thursday night.

The Spartans scored 165 points, well ahead of Jesup with 112 points in second. Other area finishes included East Marshall in fourth with 82 points, BCLUW fifth with 79.5, GMG ninth with 19 points and North Tama 10th with 10 points.

Grundy Center freshman Ava Heeren had a hand in three gold medals on Thursday, winning the 100 and 200 and anchoring the winning 4×100 relay team along with Carlie Willis, Shirley Monaghan and Allison Koch.

Ellery Luhring added a win in the 400 and Ava Mundt and Maddy Hendershot were field event champions in the high jump and long jump, respectively. Laney Dole, Luhring, Karlee Lynch and Grace Storjohann were also the winning quartet in the 4×800 relay.

East Marshall won two hurdle events – Cora Talbert, Vaeda Bryan, Marisa Cahalan and Morgan Neuroth teamed up to claim the shuttle hurdle and Neuroth added a win in the 400 hurdles.

BCLUW’s 4×400 closed out the night with a win, with the baton passing between Raegan Crawford, Elise Engle, Kalia Stover and Mallori Jones.

GMG’s best finish was fourth in the shuttle hurdle with the team of Madison Edwards, Abby Parks, Chloe Dieleman and Jocie Parks. North Tama’s 4×800 quartet of Rachael Murty, Violet Seda, Ava Breakenridge and Jamie Jacobs claimed fourth for the Redhawks’ top point getters of the night.

CIU girls shut out Greene County

JEFFERSON — Ashlyn Finch scored two goals as Central Iowa United girls soccer blanked Greene County 4-0 on Thursday.

Addison Turner and Bianca Lane added goals for CIU (3-5) and Haylee Merryman and Lilyan Hadsall were each credited with an assist.

Cassidy Smith earned the shutout in net with three saves.

Next up for CIU is a road tilt at Gilbert on Friday, April 26.

West Marshall girls 7th at Norsemen Relays

STORY CITY — Audrey Girard’s win in the 100-meter dash highlighted a seventh-place team finish for West Marshall girls track and field at Thursday’s Norsemen Girls Relays hosted at Roland-Story High School.

The Trojans scored 62.5 points in the 10-team field. Roland-Story won the team title with 154.5 points, followed by Bondurant-Farrar with 116 and Lake Mills with 85.5.

Girard won in 13.07 seconds, a half-second faster than runner-up Avery Eastvold of Lake Mills. Girard was also third in the 200-meter dash.

Abby Tollefson was second in the 100 hurdles in 17.10 and Kylee Schuler cleared 5-feet for second in the high jump.

STC track runs at Newton Co-Ed

NEWTON — South Tama County boys track and field finished seventh out of 14 teams as part of a Newton Co-Ed meet on Thursday.

STC scored 42 total points. ADM ran away with the team title, scoring 151 points, followed by Nevada with 96 points.

Tommy Tyynismaa and James Brant finished 1-2 in the 1,600-meter run; Tyynismaa clocked in at 4:29.86 and Brant followed at 4:34.61.

Tyrus Clegg contributed a fourth-place finish in the long jump at 19 feet, 8 inches and the distance medley relay quartet of Chanden Graybeal, Cyrell Etzen, Cade Rosenberger and Braxten Rohrs was fourth in 3:54.52.

The Trojan girls were 13th with seven points. The sprint medley finished sixth in 2:04.58, with the quartet of Nazaret Carrillo, Naomi Peshel, Alexis Crouch and Kayla Heck. Heck was also seventh in the 800-meter run in 2:39.49.

Jirovsky medals, but Oelwein slips past Spartans

GRUNDY CENTER — Judd Jirovsky led Grundy Center boys golf with a medalist round of 37, but Oelwein claimed the dual with the Spartans by a 159-161 margin.

Ethan Anderson was runner-up medalist with a 38 to lead Oelwein.

Eli Wegmann added a 39 for the Spartans, Sullivan Dirks scored a 40 and Preston Martens and Jaxon Kiewiet each had 45s on their scorecard to round out the Spartan scoring. Jalen Kirkpatrick added a non-scoring 46.

It is the first loss in team competition for Grundy Center this season, falling to 8-1 on the season.
