Area schools sending scores of entrants to state track and field
Iowa’s girls and boys high school state athletic organizations have released tentative state qualifier lists for the state track and field meet running Thursday through Saturday, May 16-18, at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
Here are the qualifiers from around the Times-Republican coverage area.
MARSHALLTOWN
James Johnson and Preston Johnson have each qualified for the Class 4A boys 3,200-meter run. James, a senior, is seeded eighth in 9:28.46 while Preston, a freshman, has the 17th seed at 9:40.07.
Bobcat senior Gatleel Joar is the other area qualifier, seeded 8th in the boys 400-meter hurdles in 55.30.
SOUTH TAMA
South Tama County’s boys team has five entries for next week’s state meet.
Tommy Tyynismaa is seeded 9th in both the 800 (1:59.81) and the 1,600 (4:32.01). James Brant joins Tyynismaa in the mile run with the 11th seed in 4:34.16.
Tyynismaa, an Iowa State signee, is also the anchor in the boys 4×800 with teammates Brant, Braxten Rohrs and Cade Rosenberger. The Trojans are seeded second in the event at 8:11.34. He also anchored the distance medley to a 14th seed in 3:40.70 with Chase Gustafson, Cody Blocker and Brant also carrying the baton.
WEST MARSHALL
The Trojans will be represented in six total events at the 2A state meet.
Audrey Girard has qualified in the girls 100, seeded 15th in 12.99; and the 200, seeded 13th in 26.74. She’s also part of the shuttle hurdle relay team that earned the 14th seed in 1:10.16, along with Ella Wertz, Amelia Ranson and Abby Tollefson.
Kylee Schuler will compete in the girls high jump after clearing 5-feet even at the district meet.
West Marshall’s boys have two entries — Jace Eich is seeded 7th in the open 400 in 50.55 and was the anchor of the 4×400 that qualified seeded eighth in 3:28.21 — Dylan Thompson, Erick Rosas Canchola and Brevon Gibson were also on the carry in that relay.
EAST MARSHALL
The Mustangs have three total entries for the 2A state meet.
Morgan Neuroth is seeded 2nd in the 400 hurdles at 1:06.60; she ran the opening leg of the shuttle hurdle at districts that is seeded 21st in the event in 1:11.28 with Vaeda Bryan, Makayla Hala and Cora Talbert also part of the relay.
Kaleb Grant will be East Marshall boys’ sole representative after qualifying 18th in the 800 at 2:03.69.
GRUNDY CENTER
The Spartans have once again loaded up for the 2A meet, with 23 total entries including 16 for the boys team that won a sixth-consecutive district championship on Thursday.
Tate Jirovsky is seeded 10th in the boys 400 in 51.08 and has the 12-seed in the 400 hurdles in 56.60.
Tyler Venenga is seeded 10th in the 800 with a 2:02.23 clocking.
Emerson Vokes and Kaden Lynch have each qualified for the 1,600 and 3,200-meter run again this year; Lynch and Vokes are seeded 2-3 in the 3,200 in 9:48.20 and 9:49.04, respectively; Vokes is the top seed in the 1,600 in 4:28.77 while Lynch is 10th in 4:34.39.
Tiernan Vokes qualified for the 110 hurdles with the 22nd seed in 15.87.
Kasey Seitz earned an at-large bid in the shot put with the 22nd seed after a throw of 46 feet, 11 inches at districts.
Grundy Center’s boys will also compete in all seven relay events at state.
The boys 4×100 is seeded 20th at 44.60; the 4×200 13th at 1:32.42; the 4×400 has a 7-seed in 3:27.99; the 4×800 quartet is 17th in 8:24.30; the distance medley earned the 17th seed in 3:39.86; shuttle hurdle has the 12th seed in 1:02.37; and the sprint medley is 10th in 1:35.75.
Grundy Center’s girls will have an impressive showing of their own with seven entries next week.
Raelyn Steinmeyer has the 21st seed in the open 400 in 1:02.79.
Grace Storjohann enters the 800 seeded 19th in 2:28.32.
Allison Koch will compete in the high jump, clearing 5-0 at the district meet.
The Spartan girls have four relay entries — the 4×100 is seeded 24th in 52.75. The 4×200 has the 17th seed at 4:14.39. Grundy’s 4×400 is seeded just outside of medal contention in ninth at 10:01.94; and the distance medley quartet got the 21st seed in 4:29.20.
BCLUW
The Comet tracksters have 11 total entries for state, including seven for the back-to-back Iowa Star conference champion girls.
Kalia Stover is seeded 24th in the girls 1,500 with a 5:25.02 time.
Leila Wedgwood will run in the 110-meter hurdle prelims with the 21st seed in 17.13.
There are two Comets in the girls shot put; Grace Farnsworth is seeded 12th with a best throw of 35 feet, 10 inches and Kailan McEwen is 23rd in 33-11.5.
The girls 4×800 has the highest seed for the Comet girls with a second-best district time of 10:03.19 with relay members Miranda Jones, Mallori Jones, Raegan Crawford and Stover.
BCLUW’s girls distance medley is seeded sixth, quartet of Brinna Benson, Ceanna White, Miranda Jones and Kalia Stover running 4:26.60 at districts.
The 4×400 foursome of Miranda Jones, Mallori Jones, White and Stover grabbed the 14th seed with a 4:19.26 timing.
The Comet boys are led by Cael Keller, the second seed in the open 400 in 50.21 seconds.
Keller is also part of two qualifying relays — Keller, Carter Gallentine, Alex Paxson and Cayden White are seeded 15th in the distance medley at 3:44.47. Keller is the anchor of the sprint medley team seeded 22nd in 1:38.86 with teammates Jonas Nilsen, Gallentine, and Paxson.
Orlando Montoya represents black and gold in the shot put with the 11th seed at 47 feet, 8.5 inches.
GLADBROOK-REINBECK
Kennedy Brant will be part of three total events for the Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls. She cleared 5-foot-3 to earn a spot in the 1A high jump, is seeded 12th in the open 400 in 1:02.30 and is the anchor of the eighth-seeded sprint medley team, joining up with Dylan Mathern, Blake Mathern and Elly Sieh.
GMG
Jabari Woodbury returns to state in the 1A boys 400-meter dash with the 11th seed in 51.43 seconds; he’s also the 24th seed in the 200 with a 23.44 clocking.
MESKWAKI
Sia Bear has the fourth seed in the 1A girls long jump with a 16 foot, 10.5 inch jump at districts.
Dorothy Bear will make her state debut in the 400, seeded 23rd in 1:04.57, and the 400 hurdles, where she’s seeded 24th in 1:11.32.
