Spartans secure share of West title, sweep Rebels

REINBECK — Grundy Center baseball swept Gladbrook-Reinbeck on Monday night to earn a split of the NICL West title with South Hardin.

The Spartans won 13-2 in five innings in Game 1 and pounded out a 16-9 win in Game 2. The Spartans and Tigers both finished with 9-3 records in the West — Grundy Center won two of their three head-to-head meetings with South Hardin this season.

Tanner Laube, Tate Jirovsky and Pete Lebo all knocked in two runs each for the Spartans in the opening game. Jirovsky was 3-for-4 and Brody Zinkula scored three times.

G-R rallied to within 10-9 of the Spartans after six innings of Game 2 but Grundy put up six more runs in the seventh inning to put away the Rebels.

Ethan Meester was 3-for-4 with four runs batted in and Brayden Davie knocked in two runs in the nightcap.

Judd Jirovsky, Tate Jirovsky and Davie teamed up to strike out 10 Rebel batters in the final game.

Isaac Clark, Drew Eilers and Bennett Sieh all had two hits and two RBI for the Rebels in Game 2.

Grundy Center (13-6) welcomes 2A #1 West Marshall to the George Wilhelm Complex on Friday. G-R (3-17) heads to Union on Wednesday.
