SPORTS SHORTS: Mustangs maul Eagles to improve to 2-0
DES MOINES — The East Marshall football team improved to 2-0 with a 40-21 trampling of Saydel on Friday night.
The Mustangs led 26-7 at the half on their way to an unbeaten start. East Marshall’s offense totaled a balanced attack of 372 yards, with 197 yards in rushing and 175 in passing.
Drew Wheater (61 yards) and Xavier Slifer (60) led the East Marshall ground game. Kaden Grant chipped in 46 yards and quarterback Jake Farrington had 22 yards, with all four ball carriers scoring touchdowns.
Farrington was 11-for-13 passing for 175 yards and two touchdowns. Blake Neuroth led the way with six catches for 67 yards and a score, while Eli Burns had three grabs for 53 yards and a touchdown. Slifer had one catch for 41 yards as well.
Defensively, Wyatt Stalzer led the Mustangs with 10 tackles, including one quarterback sack and three tackles for loss. Wheater added 7.5 stops. East Marshall’s defense totaled six takeaways led by Jaxson Boswell’s three interceptions and a fumble recovery. Neuroth returned a pick 70 yards and Dallas Miller added an interception.
Spartans slam Falcon football for 43-7 triumph
PARKERSBURG — The Grundy Center football team cruised to 2-0 with a 43-7 trouncing of Aplington-Parkersburg on Friday night as the Spartan defense held A-P to just 79 yards of total offense.
Grundy Center quarterback Judd Jirovsky was 18-for-18 passing for 282 yards and three touchdowns. He found Devin Hinders four times for 69 yards and two touchdowns, while Brayden Davie had two catches for 72 yards, including a 63-yard touchdown. Tiernan Vokes added five catches for 67 yards.
Brody Zinkula led the Spartan backfield with 15 carries for 79 yards and a TD, while Jirovsky had two touchdown runs.
Ryker Thoren led the Grundy Center defense with 5.5 tackles and Pete Lebo had five tackles and a fumble recovery.
West Marshall marches all over South Hamilton
STATE CENTER — The West Marshall football team bounced back in a big way, beating South Hamilton 56-6 on Friday night.
Senior tailback Ben Gonzalez rushed 18 times for 210 yards and three touchdowns, and Michael Lechnir added two more touchdown runs for the Trojans (1-1). Quarterback Vincent Clawson was 5-for-8 passing for 146 yards and two touchdowns, including a 92-yard scoring strike to Kinnick Geers. AJ Dee had two catches for 36 yards and Holden Simms had a 16-yard TD grab.
Lechnir led the Trojan defense with eight tackles, including two for loss, and Cash Johnston had six stops, also with two for loss. Geers returned one of his two interceptions for a touchdown, and Simms recovered a fumble. Placekicker Wade Weuve was 8-for-8 on extra-point attempts.
Redhawks dropped by Huskies’ ground game
TRAER — The North Tama football team dropped to 0-2 with a 27-6 loss to Nashua-Plainfield in Friday’s non-district clash.
The visiting Huskies (2-0) led 13-6 at the half and put the game away with a pair of fourth-quarter scores.
Nashua-Plainfield rushed for 375 of its 436 yards of total offense, as Eli Kalainoff had 30 carries for 235 yards and two touchdowns. Aiden Gelner added 83 yards and a 1-yard TD dive.
North Tama quarterback Kolt Knaack was 11-for-24 for 111 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He connected with Josh Dostal for a 40-yard scoring strike in the second quarter. Dostal finished with seven catches for 71 yards, and Clayton Williams added a 26-yard catch. Tyrus Luker rushed for a team-high 32 yards.
Gavin Rausch led the Redhawk defense with 14.5 tackles, and Kayvin Morris made nine stops. Kayler Morris had two interceptions.
Tiger volleyball rattles off three wins in home tourney
The Marshalltown Community College volleyball team went 3-1 at its own Tiger Invite this weekend, capping the event with back-to-back wins on Saturday at the Student Activity Center.
The Tigers improved to 4-5 for the season thanks to a winning weekend. MCC opened the tournament with a victory over Olive-Harvey CC (25-12, 25-9, 25-18) before suffering their only loss Friday, a three-set sweep at the hands of Highland CC (25-15, 25-19, 25-15).
MCC bounced back with a pair of wins Saturday, going four games with both St. Louis CC (26-24, 17-25, 25-12, 25-15) and Fort Scott CC (25-22, 25-23, 18-25, 25-16).
The Tigers were led on the weekend by Genesis Melenciano Carela, who compiled 54 kills to lead the attack. Yafriel Payano Pichardo piled up 35 kills and Kaylee LaPlant added 34 more. Violet Hougland chipped in 15 kills. Freshman setter Addy Stull finished with 98 assists, and Carolina Arcia added 18 more.
Defensively, BCLUW graduate Callie Swanson led the way with 80 digs. Carela came away with 40 digs and Stull had 38. LaPlant led the servers with eight aces, Swanson had seven, and Carela finished with six.
At the net, Pichardo and LaPlant both totaled seven blocks, Houghland had six, while Carela and Imigyn Stratton added three apiece.
MCC is back in action Wednesday with a home match against Iowa Lakes.
MCC men’s soccer scores third consecutive win
ROSEMOUNT, Minn. — The Marshalltown Community College men’s soccer team secured its third straight win, stomping Dakota County Technical College 4-1 on Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers (3-1-1) led 2-1 at the intermission before scoring two unanswered goals in the second half. Dakota County’s lone goal tied the score at 1-all in the 26th minute, but MCC had more in the tank for the rest of the match.
“The boys showed a lot of character throughout the game,” said MCC head coach Chris Fuchsen. “Other than the drop in focus leading to the lone goal against, the boys were sharp and efficient.”
Guilherme Nakamura scored two goals for the Tigers, breaking the 1-all tie with back-to-back goals. He scored in the final minute before halftime and added a second tally 10 minutes into the second half.
Alejandro Veintimilla and Angel Vasquez both scored goals, while Andres Gutierrez had two assists. Mikiya Fujii and Enrique Cao had one assist each.
MCC goalkeeper Joao Quaglio Augusto recorded three saves to help the Tigers take the win.
The Tigers are back home on Friday, entertaining Metropolitan CC at 1 p.m. on the Marshalltown Community College campus.
Tiger women defeated by Dakota County
ROSEMOUNT, Minn. — The Marshalltown Community College women’s soccer team fell 8-2 to Dakota County Technical College on Saturday.
Luisa De Castro Reboredo and Manoella De Carvalho Santos accounted for MCC’s goals.
Goalkeeper Gio De Carvalho Da Silva Damiano totaled 17 saves in the loss for the Tigers (0-2).
MCC hosts Metrpolitan CC on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
