SPORTS SHORTS: West Marshall netters sweep Saydel
SAYDEL — West Marshall volleyball continued an undefeated start to Heart of Iowa play with a 3-0 sweep of Saydel on Monday.
The Trojans (8-13, 4-0 HOIAC) won 25-16, 25-2, 25-10.
Lily Zahnd led the West Marshall attack with eight kills and Arya Wertz, Avery Evertsen and Kylee Schuler all had three kills each. Evertsen added three total blocks.
Natalie Nichols distributed 11 assists. Defensively, Lillian Fischer had 12 digs.
The Trojans were 52-of-57 from the service line with 12 aces; Zahnd had five aces, Reese Jensen four and Evertsen dropped in three aces.
West Marshall competes at a Nevada tournament on Saturday and returns to HOIAC play against South Hamilton in State Center next Monday, Sept. 30.
GMG’s Dieleman takes 3rd at BGM meet
BROOKLYN — GMG senior Grady Dieleman finished third overall at a BGM cross country meet hosted at Brooklyn Country Club on Monday.
Dieleman finished the course in 19:37. Gage Heyne of English Valleys won the race in 17:43 and Sigourney’s Troy Klett was the runner-up at 19:25.
Rider Kupka added an eighth-place run for GMG in 20:39 — the Wolverines did not field a full team.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck was the top boys team in the standings, finishing third with 72 points. H-L-V (43) and Belle Plaine (46) were the top two boys teams on Monday.
Devin Wrider led G-R in 13th overall, scoring sixth place points with a 22:33.
Meskwaki was 4th as a team with 86 points. Emery Roberts scored seventh in 22:51.
North Tama did not have a team score; Cayd Cooper and Levi Harmsen finished 21st and 22nd overall in 24:15 and 24:22, respectively.
Rachael Murty led the North Tama girls in 10th overall in 26:10. The Redhawks were second out of two complete teams in the girls competition. Meskwaki’s Kaelonna Kaler was 25th in 35:03 and Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s Katelyn Monaghan finished 28th in 36:52.
