SPORTS SHORTS: Redhawks roll into regional semifinals
TRAER — The fifth-ranked North Tama volleyball team claimed its fifth straight match, beating HLV in three sets to advance through Wednesday’s Class 1A Region 7 quarterfinals.
The Redhawks (23-15) prevailed by scores of 25-15, 25-15, 25-11, to advance to Monday’s regional finals at home against Belle Plaine (17-13).
Kruiz Ewoldt compiled 20 kills to power the North Tama attack, hitting at a .349 efficiency on 43 swings. Cayleigh Heller came away with 12 assists and nine kills, while Lily Sells had seven kills and Briar Blake five. Zoey Rausch totaled 17 assists and Addison Hochstetler added eight assists.
Hochstetler led the defense with 14 digs, Rausch had nine, and Ewoldt finished with eight. Heller was 10-for-12 serving with five of the Redhawks’ 13 aces. Hochstetler went 16-for-18 with two aces, Kylie Calderwood was 13-for-13 with an ace, and Ewoldt was 9-for-11 with three aces.
Ema Roberts led HLV (14-15) with eight kills, 11 digs, a block and 9-of-10 serving.
BCLUW blasts Madrid in regional playoffs
CONRAD — The No. 6 BCLUW volleyball team blew through Madrid in straight sets here Wednesday, walloping the Tigers 25-8, 25-6, 25-6 in the Class 1A Region 5 quarterfinals.
Grace Farnsworth and Olivia Peters powered the Comet attack with 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Setter Cassie Nason finished with 29 assists.
Klayre Gallentine paced the BCLUW defense with 10 digs and Peters added eight more. Goldie Kaisand led at the net with two blocks. Peters served 16-for-16 with three aces, and Farnsworth was 8-for-8 with three more aces. Virginia Kaisand went 14-for-14 with an ace, and Nason was 12-for-12 at the line.
Iyla Fine led Madrid (2-23) with three kills.
BCLUW (29-10) hosts Fort Dodge St. Edmond (19-11) in Monday’s 7 p.m. regional semifinals.
Rebels put away pesky Regents in regional quarterfinal
REINBECK — The Gladbrook-Reinbeck volleyball team needed four sets to dispatch Waterloo Christian in Wednesday’s Class 1A Region 5 quarterfinals, eliminating the Regents 25-19, 25-19, 26-28, 25-15.
The Rebels (22-20) were led by junior middle hitter Kennedy Brant with a whopping 24 kills. Elly Sieh added 10 kills, Lilly Dripps had nine, and Jaden Hansen had eight. Sophomore setter Kailey Larsen finished with 54 assists.
Senior libero Dylan Mathern led the G-R defense with 26 digs, Brant had 14, and both Larsen and Hansen had 10. Brant’s three blocks led the way as well.
Larsen was the team’s top server, going 24-for-24 with two aces. Braelynn Morgan was 18-for-21 with three aces, while Sieh was 17-for-20 with three aces. Hansen was 9-for-12 with two aces as well.
Trinity Renaud led Waterloo Christian (13-20) with 14 kills.
G-R hosts GMG (20-10) in Monday’s 7 p.m. regional semifinals in Reinbeck.
GMG volleyball bombs Baxter for 20th win
GARWIN — The GMG volleyball team breezed past Baxter in Wednesday’s Class 1A Region 5 quarterfinals, beating the Bolts 25-7, 25-18, 25-16.
The Wolverines (20-10) got a balanced attack to help them advance into Monday’s regional semifinals at Gladbrook-Reinbeck (22-20). Rhianna Murty led the way with seven kills, while Hadlee Hempy, Landry August and Makayla Pendleton had six kills each. Olivia Maddux added five kills, and Hempy finished with 20 assists.
Aubree Runner led the GMG defense with 10 digs, while Olivia and Ava Maddux had seven digs each. Skyler Murty made two blocks as well.
August was the top server, going 16-for-16 with three aces, while Runner was 15-for-16. Ava Maddux was 14-for-15, while Olivia Maddux was 11-for-11 with two aces. Hempy served 10-for-10 with an ace.
