Bobcats battle to second in home quad
Marshalltown girls wrestling passed some tough tests in the team’s home opener on Tuesday night.
The Bobcats went 2-1 in a quad with Benton, BGM and West Marshall at the Roundhouse in Marshalltown. Marshalltown defeated BGM, 48-36 and eked past West Marshall on tiebreaker criteria, 43-42. Benton bested the Bobcats, 66-18.
“All three duals were tough girls,” MHS head coach Isaiah Cox said. “The girls had to freakin’ wrestle tonight, and that’s what I told the girls from the jump — none of this was going to be easy, they had to go out there and compete.”
The Bobcats’ ability to fill out a lineup served them well against BGM, taking six forfeits to get the edge on a hard-nosed Bears team that won six of the eight head-to-head matches in the dual.
Adele Beek pinned her opponent at 120 pounds, as did returning state qualifier Genevieve Lantigua at 155 pounds.
Benton had more depth, looking sharp as they buzzed through the Bobcat lineup, save for two losses by forfeit and a Madylin McDonald pin at 135 pounds for MHS’ only head-to-head win in the dual.
MHS split the 14 weights with West Marshall right down the middle, with the Bobcats getting the edge on criteria via receiving three victories by forfeit. All seven of the Trojans’ wins came in head-to-head bouts; Marshalltown’s Allanna Robinson (115), Beek, McDonald and Lantigua were head-to-head victors for the Bobcats.
“We were just fighting, man, not giving up,” Cox said. “That’s what I’ve been looking for the whole time getting ready for this season, just keep going. A lot of these girls are first-year wrestlers that never thought they could do it, and then they’re out there doing it and it’s like, ‘I told you, this is gonna happen right here.'”
Marshalltown will be back home next Thursday against Ames and West Des Moines Valley.
“I just want to see them keep growing,” Cox said. “We’ve got some freakin’ fire girls here right now.”
West Marshall didn’t have a full-strength lineup but the girls that were ready to wrestle performed well on Tuesday, Trojan coach Randall Kasal said.
Benton clipped West Marshall, 40-39, also by criteria, and the Trojans defeated BGM, 40-29.
Four Trojans went 3-0 on the mat Tuesday; Jenna Randall at 105 pounds, Lillian Fischer at 145, Darbi Baker at 190 and Elizabeth Kalinay at 235.
“We got a lot of good leadership out of our seniors, nothing out of the ordinary there,” Kasal said. “Elizabeth Kalinay is just our juggernaut out there and is going to go out there and do whatever we need her to do, Jenna at 105, got what we needed out of her. … We wrestled pretty well overall, we’ve just got some illness and injury going around and have some holes we need to fill.”
West Marshall heads to Gilbert for a triangular next Monday.
“We’re trying to get better on the bottom,” Kasal said. “We’ve seen a lot of good wrestling on top, lot of good things on our feet, we can always get better, but … we’re definitely gonna be working on being strong on the bottom, that’s where we need to start and where we’ve been putting a lot of work in already. And we just need to trust our attacks and trust on our feet.”
