BIG FOUR HOOPS: Tennessee tops No. 17 Hawkeyes at inaugural event
NEW YORK — Talaysia Cooper scored 19 of her 23 points in the second half to help Tennessee beat No. 17 Iowa 78-68 on Saturday night in the inaugural Women’s Champions Classic.
Her jumper with 3:04 left in the fourth gave the Lady Vols (7-0) a 68-67 lead and sparked a 12-1 run to close the game away. Cooper scored four straight in the spurt including one off a steal on the inbounds with 1:23 left to seal the victory.
Lucy Olsen scored 23 points for Iowa (8-1), which committed a season-high 30 turnovers. Iowa struggled against the frantic pace and committed 18 of its turnovers in the first half as the game was tied at 35 at the break.
No. 20 Iowa State women clobber Chippewas
AMES — Audi Crooks had 19 points and 10 rebounds, Addy Brown added 18 points, and No. 20 Iowa State rolled past Central Michigan 82-56 on Sunday.
Emily Ryan added 12 points, six assists and six steals for Iowa State (8-2).
Jayda Mosley scored 11 points and Madi Morson and Ayanna-Sarai Darrington 10 each for the Chippewas (3-6).
Gayle scores late to lift Michigan over Iowa, 85-83
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Vladislav Goldin and Danny Wolf had double-doubles and Roddy Gayle Jr. scored with 4.6 seconds remaining to give Michigan (8-1, 2-0) an 85-83 win over Iowa on Saturday for its seventh straight win.
Pryce Sandfort missed an awkward baseline 3-point attempt at the buzzer for Iowa.
Golden scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Wolf had 13 points and 14 rebounds. Tre Donaldson added 18 points and Gayle had 17 for Michigan.
Payton Sandfort made four of his last five 3-point attempts, including a pair in the final two minutes to help Iowa (7-2, 1-1) tie at 83. He finished with 19 points. Pryce Sandfort and Josh Dix added 16 points each, Owen Freeman 13 and Drew Thelwell 10.
