Ames edges Bobcats at Alliance golf

WATERLOO — Ames was just a little too much for the Marshalltown girls’ golf team once more.

The Little Cyclones scored the Iowa Alliance Conference Tournament title on Tuesday at Gates Park Golf Course, holding off the Bobcats by 11 strokes.

Ames shot 337 to finish atop the nine-team field, while Marshalltown was second at 348. Des Moines Roosevelt was the only other Alliance team under 400, shooting 367.

Des Moines East’s Saleah Vivanh Vong earned meet medalist honors with her 1-over-par round of 73, outlasting Marshalltown senior Natalie Henson by two strokes.

Ames was led by Emersen Motl and Elizabeth Duncan, who shot 79 to lead the Little Cyclones to victory. Macy Button added an 87 and both Estelle Wong and Jessie Lohman added 92 to help deliver the team title to Ames.

Marshalltown’s Harper Wilson and Gaby Estabrook both shot 89 to finish seventh and eighth, respectively, in the individual standings, scoring second-team all-conference honors in the process. Emma Clawson contributed a 95 to the final team tally, while Morgan Hilderbrand (97) and Hallie Kuhlers (106) also competed for MHS.

The Bobcats return to action by hosting their Class 4A Region 3 tournament on May 21 at Elmwood Country Club.
