Bobcat girls close at 12-0

Hughes, Jones cap doubles career at 50-0

The Marshalltown girls’ tennis team put an exclamation point on the end of the regular season.

The Bobcats closed with a record of 12-0 by beating Des Moines North 11-0 on Tuesday at the Marshalltown Court Complex, highlighted by a remarkable accomplishment for seniors Ellie Hughes and Rachel Jones.

The No. 4 doubles duo completed their tennis careers with a 50-0 record in doubles play during their four years, capping that achievement with Tuesday’s 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Hai Paw and Pawdaysay Than.

Marshalltown’s singles and doubles lineup for Monday’s Class 2A regional meet at home won’t include the senior duo, so Tuesday’s triumph was their finale.

The rest of the Bobcats hope to have more in store for the postseason.

Marshalltown — ranked 10th in 2A by Iowa High School Tennnis — surrendered just five games throughout Tuesday’s contest, turning away Des Moines North (1-7) in definitive fashion.

Kennedy Feldman tallied a 6-0, 6-1 win over Selena Cruz at No. 1 singles, and Reese Jensen won over Ashley Martinez-Cortez by the same score at No. 5.

The rest of the singles wins were 6-0, 6-0 shutouts for the Bobcats: Kate Sandvick, Kate Hauser, Lily Zahnd and Ellie Downs.

Feldman and Jensen paired up to win at No. 1 doubles, 6-0, 6-1, while Nos. 2-4 were shutouts as well. Sandvick and Zahnd, Hauser and Downs, and Hughes and Jones prevailed in 6-0, 6-0 fashion.

Bella Avise and Libby Eberle tacked on a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at No. 5 doubles to seal the victory.

Marshalltown closed Tuesday as one of three teams in 2A without a dual meet defeat, joined by Johnston (15-0) and Clinton (8-0).

The Bobcats host Ankeny, Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Cedar Rapids Prairie, Ottumwa and Waterloo West for Monday’s 9 a.m. regional singles and doubles tournament back at the Marshalltown Court Complex.

Feldman and since-graduated Rebekah Downs teamed up to qualify for state doubles last season, becoming the first Bobcat tandem to do so since 1985.
